Chapter 15 - The Sovereign Claim at Midnight

Twenty-four hours later, the grand executive ballroom at the top of the Russo Logistics headquarters was bathed in golden light and soft jazz music.

The entire executive board, the regional operations directors, and the remaining loyal syndicate capos were gathered in their finest evening attire.

The morning newspapers had delivered a historic headline: LEONE CRIME SYNDICATE TOPPLED BY MASSIVE FEDERAL RAID — RUSSO LOGISTICS PRAISED FOR COOPERATION.

Vincent Moretti had signed a full federal confession, ensuring he would spend the next thirty years behind the iron bars of a maximum-security prison.

Uncle Silvio was quietly confined to his cottage in upstate New York, stripped of every cent and forbidden from ever speaking the Russo name again.

The organization was stable, legitimate, wealthy, and united under a single, unchallenged ruler.

At the center of the room, Penelope Hayes stood surrounded by department heads who were eagerly congratulating her on her brilliant audit restructuring.

She wore a breathtaking, floor-length midnight-blue velvet gown that accentuated her graceful silhouette, her dark hair cascading in soft curls over her bare shoulders.

Dominic watched her from across the room, feeling an overwhelming surge of pride and profound emotion that he had never felt for another human being.

She had walked into his office twenty-four hours ago as a terrified employee running for her life.

Tonight, she stood as the brilliant architect of their salvation, commanding the respect of every powerful figure in the room.

Dominic set his glass down on a passing silver tray and walked steadily toward her.

The crowd of executives and capos parted instantly, clearing a wide path as the boss approached with deliberate, commanding grace.

Penelope turned, her emerald eyes meeting his, and the rest of the crowded room seemed to fade into complete insignificance.

“Good evening, Ms. Hayes,” Dominic said, his deep baritone carrying softly across the quieted ballroom.

“Good evening, Mr. Russo,” Penelope replied, her lips curving into a radiant, teasing smile.

“I trust the board was satisfied with the third-quarter financial reconciliation?”

“The board was entirely astonished,” Dominic replied, taking her right hand in his and bringing it gently to his lips.

“But there is still one unresolved discrepancy on the master ledger that requires our immediate attention.”

Penelope raised an eyebrow, her curiosity genuinely piqued.

“An unresolved discrepancy?” she echoed.

“I personally reconciled every single account before sunset.”

“What did I miss?”

Dominic reached into his tuxedo jacket pocket, drawing out the small red velvet box that had started this entire dangerous journey.

The ballroom fell into an absolute, breathless hush as Dominic slowly lowered himself onto one knee before her.

A collective gasp echoed across the room from the assembled board members and capos alike.

Dominic Russo, the iron king of the underworld who knelt before no man or government, was kneeling willingly before his forensic accountant.

He opened the box, revealing his mother’s heirloom ring, the blood-red cushion-cut diamond sparkling with fiery brilliance under the chandeliers.

“When you brought this ring back into my office during the storm, Vincent had given it to you as a trap, a lie, and a death sentence,” Dominic spoke, his voice filled with raw, unmasked tenderness.

“He tried to use you as a pawn in his cowardly games.”

“But over the last forty-eight hours, you showed me what true loyalty, brilliance, and courage look like.”

“You didn't just save my business, Penelope.”

“You saved my life, my family, and my soul from the darkness that was consuming me.”

Dominic looked up into her glistening eyes, holding the ring delicately between his scarred fingers.

“I publicly claimed you yesterday morning to protect you from wolves,” Dominic continued, his gaze holding hers with unyielding passion.

“Tonight, I am asking you to claim me, not out of strategy or survival, but because I love you with everything I have left in this world.”

“Will you do me the absolute honor of becoming my wife, my partner, and the queen of the Russo family?”

Tears of pure, overwhelming joy spilled over Penelope’s eyelashes, tracing warm paths down her glowing cheeks.

She looked down at the man who had sheltered her, fought for her, bled for her, and respected her as an absolute equal from the very beginning.

“Yes, Dominic,” Penelope whispered, her voice choking with emotion before ringing out with joyful certainty.

“Yes, a thousand times yes.”

Dominic slid the intricate platinum thorn band onto her left ring finger, where it settled with perfect, effortless elegance.

He rose to his feet, wrapping his strong arms around her waist and lifting her slightly off the floor as he captured her lips in a passionate, breathtaking kiss.

The entire ballroom erupted into thunderous, deafening applause and cheering.

Glasses of vintage champagne were raised high into the air as the capos, executives, and employees toasted their new leaders.

Dominic rested his forehead against Penelope’s, his hands cradling her face as they shared a private, peaceful smile amidst the roar of the celebration.

The rain had stopped, the storm had cleared, and the shadows of betrayal were forever vanquished by the morning light.
