Chapter 7 - The Media Storm And The Rise Of The New Chairwoman

By noon that same day, the financial news networks, business tabloids, and morning talk shows had completely abandoned every other headline to focus exclusively on the seismic corporate earthquake at Moretti-Cole Global.

‘HOSTILE TAKEOVER: SILENT WIFE OVERTHROWS BILLIONAIRE COLE DYNASTY!’ screamed the front page of the Wall Street Journal, featuring a massive, full-color photograph of me walking out of the executive boardroom flanked by my tactical security team.

Television anchors breathlessly analyzed the dramatic downfall of Richard and Adrian Cole, detailing their overnight arrest on federal wire fraud, tax evasion, and embezzlement charges, while painting a glowing, triumphant portrait of me as the brilliant, long-suffering academic scholar who had quietly rescued the dying company from total collapse.

Inside my expansive corner office on the fiftieth floor, I watched a financial news segment on the wall-mounted television while sipping my dark roast coffee.

“They’re painting you as a saint, Elena,” Nico chuckled, leaning against the floor-to-ceiling glass window with his tablet in hand.

“A corporate Joan of Arc delivering the city from corrupt billionaire tyrants.”

“Let them write whatever narrative keeps the stock prices climbing,” I replied calmly, setting my coffee cup down on the glass desk.

“Public perception is just another asset to be managed.”

The secure intercom on my desk chimed softly, and my new executive assistant’s voice came through.

“Chairwoman Moretti-Cole? You have an unscheduled visitor in the ground-floor lobby insisting on speaking with you immediately.”

I raised an eyebrow.

“Who is it?”

“It’s Vanessa Hart, ma’am. She claims she has information regarding Adrian’s hidden overseas assets that the federal prosecutors missed.”

A cold, sharp smile touched the corners of my lips.

Vanessa Hart.

The woman who had stood beneath the ballroom chandelier smiling while I was whipped thirty times—the woman who had assumed my humility meant she could steal my husband and my life without consequence.

“Send her up,” I instructed smoothly.

“Escort her straight to my office.”

Ten minutes later, the heavy double doors of my office swung open, and Vanessa was nudged inside by one of Dominic’s tactical operatives.

She looked like a shadow of her former high-society self.

Her designer silver dress was gone, replaced by an ordinary, unbranded trench coat; her hair was pulled back messily, and her eyes were red-rimmed and swollen from crying.

She stopped dead in her tracks when she saw me sitting behind the massive obsidian desk, framed by the sparkling city skyline, with my five brothers standing silently in the background like stone statues.

“Elena...” Vanessa whispered, her voice trembling pathetically as she took a tentative step forward.

“Please... you have to help me. The federal prosecutors seized my apartment, my bank accounts, my jewelry... they’re charging me with grand larceny and tax evasion!”

I didn't invite her to sit down.

I simply rested my elbows on the glass desk, steepling my fingers together, and looked down at her with absolute, icy detachment.

“You chose to build your lifestyle on stolen corporate funds, Vanessa,” I said quietly.

“You thought you were clever, playing the glamorous mistress to a billionaire heir who was burning through money that wasn't even his.”

“I was manipulated by Adrian!” Vanessa blurted out, her voice pitching up in hysterical desperation as she fell to her knees on the plush carpet.

“He told me you were a cold, unloving wife! He said you didn't care about him! I didn't know he was embezzling!”

“You stood in my ballroom and smiled while I was whipped thirty times,” I reminded her, my voice dropping into a razor-sharp register that made her flinch violently.

“You didn't care about manipulation. You only cared about the price tag attached to it.”

Vanessa wept openly, burying her face in her hands as the terrifying reality of her ruined life finally crushed her spirit completely.

“What... what do you want from me?” she sobbed.

“I want what you offered at the intercom,” I stated evenly.

“Every single hidden file, digital ledger, and offshore account number Adrian ever mentioned to you behind closed doors. Hand them over, and I’ll ensure the federal prosecutor recommends a reduced sentence of probation instead of ten years in a federal penitentiary.”

Vanessa didn't hesitate for a single second.

She reached into her coat pocket, pulled out a heavily encrypted flash drive, and laid it trembling on the floor before sliding it across the carpet toward my desk.

“It’s all on there,” she whispered, defeated.

“Every password, every account, every offshore safe deposit box in the Cayman Islands.”

I picked up the flash drive, tossing it gently to Gabriel Moretti, who plugged it into his forensic laptop with a predatory grin.

“Drive verified,” Gabriel nodded a moment later.

“Everything is here. We now officially control every hidden dollar the Coles ever tried to squirrel away.”

I looked down at Vanessa, who remained kneeling on the floor, broken and entirely powerless.

“Get out of my building, Vanessa,” I commanded softly.

May you like

“And if you ever set foot in this city again, my brothers won't just call the federal marshals.”

Vanessa scrambled backward on her hands and knees, scrambled to her feet, and bolted out of the double doors like a frightened animal, never looking back.
