Chapter 8 - The Final Trial And The Permanent Exile Of The Cole Family

Six months after the historic hostile takeover of Cole Enterprises, the federal courtroom in downtown Seattle was packed to the absolute rafters for the final criminal sentencing hearing of Richard, Adrian, and Margaret Cole.

The trial had been a swift, brutal masterclass in federal prosecution, driven by Luca Moretti’s airtight legal strategies and Gabriel Moretti’s flawless forensic accounting disclosures.

The jury had deliberated for less than thirty minutes before returning unanimous guilty verdicts on all counts: wire fraud, tax evasion, campaign finance violations, grand larceny, and corporate embezzlement.

I sat in the front row of the gallery, wearing an immaculate ivory coat and dark sunglasses, flanked by my five brothers who stood like an immovable wall of protection and power.

The heavy side doors opened, and the three members of the Cole family were led into the courtroom in single file.

They wore coarse orange federal jumpsuits, their wrists and ankles bound in heavy steel chains.

Richard Cole looked ancient, broken, and hollowed out by months of prison stress.

Adrian looked pathetic, his once-styled hair overgrown and unwashed, staring down at the floorboards in absolute shame.

Margaret sobbed quietly into her hands, her social standing, her wealth, and her aristocratic pride completely vaporized.

Judge Sarah Lin presided over the bench, her expression stern, cold, and entirely unyielding as she reviewed the final sentencing documents.

“We are here today for the formal sentencing phase in the matters of United States v. Richard Cole, Adrian Cole, and Margaret Cole,” Judge Lin announced, her voice echoing clearly off the high mahogany ceilings.

“The court has reviewed the exhaustive federal indictments, the financial restitution schedules, and the unassailable evidence of systemic, premeditated white-collar crime.”

Judge Lin raised her eyes, looking directly across the courtroom toward the defense table.

“Mr. Richard Cole, for your orchestration of a billion-dollar corporate fraud scheme, tax evasion, and illegal political bribery, this court sentences you to thirty-five years in federal penitentiary without the possibility of parole.”

Richard flinched as if struck by lightning, his head dropping into his shackled hands.

“Mr. Adrian Cole,” Judge Lin continued, shifting her gaze to my former husband.

“In addition to your direct complicity in corporate embezzlement and wire fraud, the court takes serious note of your staggering moral turpitude, abuse of corporate power, and acts of public brutality.”

Adrian squeezed his eyes shut, trembling violently as the words washed over him.

“For the counts of corporate conspiracy, grand larceny, and aggravated assault, this court sentences you to twenty-eight years in federal penitentiary.”

“And Mrs. Margaret Cole, for your active participation in corporate conspiracy and witness intimidation, you are sentenced to fifteen years.”

Judge Lin struck her gavel down with a sharp, echoing CRACK.

“Court is adjourned.”

As the federal marshals moved in to haul the three disgraced billionaires away toward maximum-security confinement, Adrian turned his head desperately, locking his tear-filled eyes onto mine for one final, pathetic second.

I slowly lowered my sunglasses down the bridge of my nose, looking right back at him with the cold, absolute detachment of a queen surveying a conquered peasant.

The marshals pulled him away, the heavy oak doors closing behind them with a final, echoing thud that signaled the absolute end of the Cole dynasty.

I stood up smoothly from my seat, hooking my arm through Dominic’s, while Matteo, Luca, Gabriel, and Nico flanked us on either side.

“Shall we go home?” Dominic asked quietly, a warm, proud smile breaking across his face.

May you like

“Yes,” I replied, looking out the courthouse windows toward the bright, sunlit skyline of the city we now owned and protected.

“Let’s go home.”
