Chapter 11 - THE ASCENT THROUGH THE DARK SPINE

The red emergency beacons pulsed along the concrete corridor like the dying heartbeat of a mechanical monster.

Thick steel blast doors had sealed the medical bay off from the primary elevator banks, trapping us forty floors beneath our children.

The distant rumble of heavy explosives shook the subterranean foundations, raining dust from the exposed pipes overhead.

"They used shaped breaching charges on the central transformer room," Marcus said, racking the slide of his tactical rifle.

"Every digital elevator car is locked at the ground-floor lobby with the safety brakes deployed," Marcus added, checking his tactical display.

"What about the freight shafts?" I demanded, grabbing Adrian's bloodied arm with both hands.

"My children are forty stories above us with only one guard, Adrian!" I shouted, the fury and terror threatening to shatter my voice.

"Look at me, Evelyn," Adrian commanded, grabbing both of my shoulders with his large, calloused hands.

His dark gray eyes were completely steady, radiating a lethal, focused calm that instantly cut through the roaring panic in my skull.

"Noah and Lily are in the master suite panic room," Adrian said with absolute certainty.

"The interior vault door is forged from six-inch hardened ballistic titanium," Adrian reminded me.

"Nobody gets through that vault without my retinal pattern or a thermal cutting torch that takes three hours to burn through," Adrian insisted.

"We have time, but we don't have a single second to waste," Adrian said, turning toward the back of the trauma room.

On the gurney, Vanessa's monitors were squealing with irregular, dying frequencies.

She pulled the oxygen mask off her pale face with trembling fingers, looking at Adrian one last time.

"The private utility conduit... behind the morgue freezers," Vanessa gasped, her voice thinning to a fragile thread.

"Dominic... Dominic helped your father build it during the federal crackdowns in the nineties," Vanessa whispered.

"It leads directly to the HVAC penthouse shaft... manual ladder all the way up," Vanessa revealed, clutching her chest.

Adrian walked over to the gurney, his harsh expression softening with a mournful, solemn respect for the girl he had once loved in another lifetime.

"Rest now, Vanessa," Adrian said quietly, gently pulling the blanket over her trembling shoulders.

"Your brother Leo is alive in our custody, and nobody will ever hurt him again," Adrian promised her.

Tears spilled down Vanessa's bruised cheeks as she closed her eyes, letting out a long, shuddering sigh of relief.

"Protect... your family, Adrian," Vanessa whispered, her hand slipping from the gurney as her heart monitor flatlined into a continuous, piercing tone.

Marcus reached down and switched off the alarm, plunging the room into a heavy, respectful silence.

"Move," Adrian ordered, spinning on his heel without looking back.

We tore through the double doors leading into the cold-storage morgue beneath the medical bay.

Behind the third stainless-steel storage locker, Adrian located the hidden manual release lever buried inside an electrical junction box.

With a metallic groan, the entire wall section slid outward, revealing a narrow, pitch-black concrete shaft stretching infinitely upward.

An industrial steel ladder was bolted directly into the reinforced concrete wall, flanked by massive electrical conduits and hydraulic lines.

"Forty stories, straight up," Marcus whispered, shining a high-powered tactical flashlight up the vertical tunnel.

"We don't climb forty stories with eighty mercenaries crawling over the structure," I said, pointing my flashlight beam at the industrial freight cables running down the center.

"What are you thinking, Evelyn?" Adrian asked, his gaze narrowing as he assessed the cables.

"This is an auxiliary counterweight hoist system for the server cooling units," I said, analyzing the mechanical pulleys with my academic training.

"The counterweight is suspended at the top floor right now," I explained rapidly.

"If we release the manual pneumatic brake on the lower winch and latch our harnesses to the hoist cable, the falling counterweight will haul us thirty floors in less than two minutes," I proposed.

Marcus looked at me as if I had lost my mind.

"Dr. Carter, that winch was designed for machine parts, not human cargo," Marcus pointed out.

"If the governor fails, we slam into the thirty-fifth floor ceiling at sixty miles an hour," Marcus warned.

"My children are upstairs with a traitor who wants them dead," I snapped back, glaring at both men.

"I don't care if we hit the ceiling; we are taking the hoist," I declared.

Adrian looked at me, a fierce, awe-struck smile breaking across his hardened face.

"You heard the lady, Marcus," Adrian barked, unclipping two heavy-duty climbing carabiners from his tactical belt.

"Rig the harnesses to the primary steel cable," Adrian commanded.

Within ninety seconds, Marcus had lashed our three harnesses to the industrial hoist line using military-grade climbing webbing.

Adrian stood directly behind me, wrapping his muscular left arm around my waist to lock my body securely against his armored chest.

I could feel the thunderous, steady beat of his heart against my back, warm and unbreakable despite the surrounding chaos.

"Hold onto my vest, Evelyn," Adrian whispered directly into my ear, his breath warm against the cold air of the shaft.

"I've got you," Adrian promised.

"Release the brake, Marcus!" Adrian shouted.

Marcus slammed the heavy iron pry bar against the hydraulic release valve.

The massive steel drum hissed violently as pressurized hydraulic fluid sprayed across the concrete floor.

With a sickening jolt that knocked the breath from my lungs, the world fell away beneath our feet.

The steel cable shrieked against the pulleys as we were yanked upward into the pitch-black shaft with dizzying, violent velocity.

Wind roared in my ears, tearing at my clothes and whipping my hair across my face.

Concrete walls and fluorescent service lights blurred past us in flashes of dizzying speed.

Floor ten.

Floor twenty.

Floor thirty.

"Engage the emergency friction brake!" Adrian roared through the rushing gale.

Marcus grabbed the overhead friction clamp with both gloved hands, throwing his entire body weight onto the manual lever.

Sparks showered down upon us like a waterfall of burning stars as the steel shoes clamped against the spinning cable.

The deceleration hit us with brutal force, lifting my feet into the air before the hoist shuddered to a violent, swinging halt.

We slammed against the service platform of the thirty-seventh floor, groaning from the impact but entirely in one piece.

Adrian kicked open the narrow steel maintenance hatch, pulling me through the opening onto the dimly lit carpet of the upper residential suites.

Above us, through the ceiling vents, the sound of heavy boots and muffled gunfire echoed from the penthouse floor.
