Chapter 8 - THE SHADOW IN THE NURSERY

I sprinted up the concrete steps leading out of the basement, my boots slamming against the steel treads.

Every second felt like an eternity as pure maternal terror propelled me through the secure elevator doors.

Adrian was half a step behind me, his weapon drawn, his face transformed into a mask of pure volcanic fury.

"Marcus! Lock down the penthouse level instantly!" Adrian roared into his communication unit.

The private elevator shot up forty floors with sickening speed.

When the elevator doors dinged open, the serene luxury of the penthouse felt suffocating and dangerous.

I bolted down the wide hallway toward the master guest suite where Noah and Lily were staying.

The female security guard posted outside the door saluted crisply, completely oblivious to the threat.

"Has anyone entered this room?" I demanded, shoving the heavy oak doors open with both hands.

"No, Dr. Carter, nobody has crossed this threshold," the guard responded in confusion.

Inside the room, the morning sun was just beginning to peek through the sheer curtains, casting warm golden beams across the bed.

Lily was sitting up in the center of the mattress, rubbing her sleepy eyes with her tiny fists.

Cradled under her left arm was the pastel-pink plush unicorn she had carried everywhere since her birthday.

Noah was sitting beside her, quietly assembling a set of wooden building blocks.

"Mommy?" Lily murmured, her voice sweet and innocent.

"Look, the sun is waking up over the big lake."

I crossed the room in two strides, dropping to my knees beside the bed.

"Sweetheart, give Mommy the unicorn for just a second," I said, striving to keep my voice completely calm despite the panic constricting my throat.

Lily looked puzzled, hugging the stuffed animal tighter to her chest.

"Why, Mommy? Starlight is sleepy too."

Adrian stepped into the room, his large presence immediately commanding the space.

He carefully holstered his weapon behind his back before approaching the bed, lowering himself onto one knee right beside me.

"Lily," Adrian said gently, his deep baritone vibrating with a soothing, tender warmth I had never witnessed before.

Lily looked at the tall, broad-shouldered man with wide, curious eyes.

"Are you the man from the airport?" Lily asked softly.

"I am," Adrian whispered, offering her a faint, genuine smile that softened the harsh angles of his scarred face.

"Your mommy needs to check Starlight's stuffing to make sure she's safe to travel," Adrian explained.

"Will you let her hold Starlight for a moment?" Adrian asked politely.

Lily hesitated, glancing between me and the imposing stranger who looked so much like her brother.

Slowly, she extended the pink plush toy toward Adrian.

"Only if you don't hurt her," Lily negotiated with childlike seriousness.

"I swear on my life nothing will ever hurt her, or you," Adrian promised solemnly.

He took the toy with immense care and handed it to me.

My hands were shaking as I reached into my pocket and pulled out a small tactical utility knife that Marcus had given me.

I carefully sliced open the hidden seam along the unicorn's back.

Inside the white synthetic cotton, buried deep near the central stitching, my fingers brushed against a hard, rectangular metallic object.

I pulled it out into the daylight.

It was a miniature military-spec transponder chip, no larger than a postage stamp, blinking with a faint, rhythmic red light.

"It's active," I whispered, holding the device up for Adrian to see.

Adrian's face darkened into an expression of murderous intent.

"They've been pinging our location from the moment you landed at O'Hare," Adrian snarled quietly.

Noah crawled over to the edge of the bed, his dark gray eyes studying the blinking device in my palm.

"Is that a tracker like the ones they put on migratory birds in my science book, Mommy?" Noah asked smartly.

Adrian looked at his son, astonishment flashing across his features at the boy's sharp intellect.

"Yes, Noah," Adrian answered, reaching out to gently tousle his dark hair.

"It's a tracker," Adrian confirmed.

"Are bad people looking for us?" Noah asked, his small brow furrowing into the exact same crease that appeared on Adrian's forehead when he was thinking.

Adrian looked at me, an unspoken vow passing between us in the golden morning light.

"No bad people are ever going to touch you, son," Adrian promised, his voice ringing with absolute certainty.

"Because your father is going to eliminate them first," Adrian declared.

Adrian stood up, taking the transponder from my hand.

"Marcus," Adrian called out into the hallway.

Marcus appeared at the bedroom door immediately.

"Take this transponder," Adrian commanded, tossing the blinking chip to his enforcer.

"Place it inside an armored convoy vehicle and drive it toward the interstate heading toward Wisconsin," Adrian ordered.

"Let Salvatore and Vance believe Evelyn and the children are being evacuated out of the city," Adrian added.

"While they redirect their strike team to chase a ghost on I-94, we hit their base at Calumet Harbor with everything we have," Adrian concluded.

Marcus caught the chip with a sharp grin.

"Consider it done, Boss," Marcus said, turning on his heel and vanishing down the corridor.

I stood up, walking Adrian out into the private foyer while the housekeeper came in to distract the twins with breakfast.

"You're going to kill your own cousin, aren't you?" I asked quietly, leaning against the foyer wall.

Adrian looked down at his hands, his expression hollow and cold.

"Salvatore made his choice when he put a tracking chip in my daughter's toy," Adrian replied without hesitation.

"In my world, Evelyn, family is bound by loyalty, not just blood," Adrian stated.

"When someone threatens my wife and my children, they cease to be family," Adrian declared.

I swallowed hard, the word wife sending a complicated jolt of electricity through my veins.

"We are divorced, Adrian," I reminded him softly.

Adrian took a step closer, his towering frame casting a protective shadow over me.

"That piece of paper was signed under false pretenses and treason," Adrian whispered, his eyes boring into mine.

"You are the only woman who has ever held my soul, Evelyn," Adrian said with raw honesty.

"And after I cleanse this city today, I will spend the rest of my life proving it to you," Adrian vowed.

May you like

Before I could answer, the elevator doors opened, and his tactical team announced their readiness.

Adrian turned away, stepping into the darkness of the elevator, ready to wage war for the family he had almost lost forever.
