Chapter 9 - AMBUSH AT CALUMET HARBOR

The industrial sprawl of Calumet Harbor looked like a graveyard of rusted steel and forgotten dreams under the overcast morning sky.

Massive grain elevators stood like decaying monoliths against the cold, gray waters of Lake Michigan.

Warehouse Forty-Two sat at the very edge of the shipping canal, surrounded by chain-link fences topped with razor wire.

Three black SUVs belonging to the Luciano syndicate were parked haphazardly outside the main loading bay.

Inside the command van parked two miles away, I sat beside the tech operator, watching the live thermal feed from our high-altitude surveillance drone.

On the screen, twenty distinct heat signatures patrolled the warehouse perimeter, carrying assault rifles.

In the center of the warehouse, a solitary heat signature was strapped to a chair, slumped over and barely moving.

Vanessa.

"Adrian, Team Alpha is in position along the southern drainage pipe," I reported through the master communication link.

"Understood," Adrian's voice returned, crystal clear and chillingly focused.

"Thermal scan shows two snipers on the catwalk near the eastern skylight," I warned him.

"Copy that," Adrian replied.

"Taking out the eastern overlook now," Adrian whispered.

Through the drone camera, I watched two thermal blooms suddenly collapse on the catwalk as Adrian's suppressed sniper team fired simultaneously from the adjacent grain silo.

The two guards fell silently into the shadows without raising an alarm.

"Breaching in three, two, one," Adrian commanded.

A deafening explosion echoed through the harbor as the heavy steel loading doors of the warehouse blew inward with an immense shockwave.

Stun grenades ignited the interior in blinding flashes of white magnesium light.

Adrian's strike team flooded the warehouse with devastating, overwhelming violence.

The crackle of automatic gunfire erupted across the audio feed, punctuated by the sharp, authoritative booms of Adrian's tactical shotgun.

"Drop your weapons! Chicago Outfit, stand down!" Marcus's voice roared through the intercom.

The Luciano mercenaries, caught completely off-guard by the sudden assault, attempted to form a defensive perimeter around the central office.

Adrian moved through the smoke like an unstoppable force of nature.

Every shot he took was calculated, precise, and lethal.

He didn't fire to wound; he fired to neutralize every threat that had dared to place a target on his children's heads.

Through the thermal feed, I watched him advance across the open floor, using shipping containers for cover before flanking two gunners pinned down behind a forklift.

With three rapid shots, the gunners dropped, and the path to the central office was cleared.

"Salvatore is retreating toward the rear dock!" Marcus shouted over the gunfire.

"I have him," Adrian answered coldly.

Adrian sprinted through the shattered glass of the office partitions, bursting out onto the rear concrete pier overlooking the freezing canal.

A man in an expensive cashmere overcoat was frantically trying to untie the mooring lines of a high-speed cigarette boat.

It was Salvatore Moretti.

"Hold it right there, Sal," Adrian's voice boomed across the water.

Salvatore spun around, drawing a nickel-plated automatic pistol and firing wildly into the mist.

The bullets sparked harmlessly off the steel shipping container beside Adrian.

Adrian didn't even flinch.

He stepped forward, raised his weapon, and fired a single round directly through Salvatore's right kneecap.

Salvatore shrieked in agony, dropping his weapon and collapsing onto the wet wooden dock, clutching his shattered leg.

Adrian walked over slowly, kicking the fallen pistol into the dark waters of the harbor.

He planted his heavy combat boot squarely on Salvatore's chest, pinning his traitorous cousin to the rotting planks.

"Did you really think the Luciano family would protect you from me?" Adrian asked, his voice dripping with venomous disgust.

"Adrian... please... we share the same blood!" Salvatore wept, gasping for air under the crushing weight of Adrian's boot.

"You forfeited your blood when you gave New York the green light to hunt my twins," Adrian snarled.

"I didn't order the hit on the kids!" Salvatore cried out in terror.

"It was Dominic Russo!" Salvatore confessed.

"Dominic orchestrated the entire coup from inside your boardroom!" Salvatore revealed.

"He told New York that you were weak because of your obsession with Evelyn!" Salvatore stammered.

"Where is Vanessa?" Adrian demanded, ignoring the pathetic excuses.

"Inside the refrigeration room... she's dying, Adrian!" Salvatore choked out.

"They beat her half to death trying to get the secondary offshore decryption codes!" Salvatore cried.

Adrian looked down at his cousin with cold, unblinking eyes.

"You should have stayed in New York, Salvatore," Adrian whispered.

Adrian pulled his sidearm and ended his cousin's betrayal with a single, definitive shot that echoed across the desolate harbor.

Inside the command van, I let out a shaky breath, my hands trembling against the console.

"Target neutralized," Adrian reported over the radio, breathing heavily.

"Marcus, break open the refrigeration unit," Adrian commanded.

"Get the medical kit inside immediately," Adrian ordered.

"We found her," Marcus's voice crackled a moment later.

"She's alive, Boss, but barely," Marcus added.

"She's asking for Dr. Carter," Marcus reported with evident confusion.

I grabbed my headset mic, my voice shaking with raw emotion.

May you like

"Bring her to the private medical bay beneath the tower," I ordered.

"I'm coming down right now," I said.
