Chapter 5 - THE MIDNIGHT CONFESSION AT LAKE SHORE DRIVE

The heavy mahogany door of the children's suite clicked shut behind me, locking automatically with a reassuring mechanical thud.
Inside, Noah and Lily were sleeping peacefully in the oversized king bed, their breathing slow and steady, completely oblivious to the war zone unfolding outside their room.
I sank slowly onto the edge of the mattress, pulling the duvet up over Noah's small shoulders while brushing a stray curl from Lily's forehead.
How had my life spiraled so catastrophically out of control in less than twenty-four hours?
I had flown into O'Hare expecting a quiet academic week, only to walk straight into a cross-continental mafia war orchestrated by my ex-husband's past mistakes.
A soft knock echoed from the heavy oak door.
"Evelyn," Adrian's voice murmured quietly through the wood. "Can I come in?"
I stood up silently, walking across the carpet and turning the heavy brass lock before pulling the door open just enough to block his entry.
"They're asleep," I whispered harshly. "What do you want, Adrian?"
He didn't try to push his way inside.
Instead, he leaned against the doorframe, looking exhausted, defeated, and older than his thirty-nine years.
"Marcus found the terminal leak," Adrian said quietly.
My breath caught in my throat. "Who was it?"
"It wasn't one of my veteran capos," Adrian replied, his voice heavy with disbelief. "It was Vanessa's younger brother, Leo."
I stared at him in absolute shock.
"Leo? But I thought he was in rehab in Florida."
"He was," Adrian nodded grimly. "Until three weeks ago, when someone paid off his six-figure gambling debts and smuggled him back into Chicago under a false identity."
"And he bypassed your security systems?"
"He had Vanessa's master biometric credentials," Adrian explained, running a hand over his face. "She gave him backdoor access to Moretti Tower years ago before we divorced."
The pieces of the horrifying puzzle finally clicked into place.
"So Vanessa wasn't just a victim," I whispered, the final illusion shattering completely. "She orchestrated her own disappearance to draw you out, using her brother as a Trojan horse while New York targeted my children."
"Not quite," Adrian corrected softly, looking down at the floorboards. "Vanessa didn't plan on New York turning on her. When she tried to back out of the blackmail scheme after sending me that photograph at O'Hare, they grabbed her."
I stared at him, a cold shiver running down my spine.
"You mean... she might actually be dead?"
"If New York has her, she's a liability they won't keep alive for long," Adrian said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "Which means we have less than twelve hours to find her before they ship her across state lines—or worse."
"Why should we care what happens to her?" I demanded, my voice rising in bitter indignation. "She is the reason our marriage was destroyed! She is the reason I raised my twins alone for six years!"
Adrian stepped forward, his dark eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that paralyzed my tongue.
"Because she is the only living key to locating the New York safehouse where your children were marked for abduction," Adrian said fiercely, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "If we don't hit them first, Evelyn, they will come back for Noah and Lily."
I stared up at the man I had loved, hated, and fled from across half a continent, realizing with absolute terror that there was no running away anymore.
Our lives were permanently bound by blood, secrets, and war.

"Where do we strike first?" I asked, my voice finally steadying into a cold, unbreakable resolve.
Adrian's lips parted into a grim, predatory smile that belonged entirely to the Chicago Boss.
