Chapter 3 - THE DIGITAL GHOSTS OF MORETTI TOWER

The digital fortress of Moretti Tower hummed with the silent, rhythmic pulse of dozens of high-end computer servers housed in the basement command center.

Inside the penthouse's private study, three massive monitors illuminated Adrian's face with a pale, ethereal blue glow.

Marcus Reed stood beside the mahogany desk, sliding a dossier across the polished surface toward Adrian.

"We decrypted the hard drive recovered from Vanessa's abandoned townhome in Lincoln Park," Marcus reported, his voice clipped and professional. "Her last outgoing transmission wasn't to the Boss's private number."

I stood near the floor-to-ceiling windows, watching the distant headlights crawl along Lake Shore Drive while pretending not to listen.

Adrian opened the manila folder, his eyes scanning the printed data logs with surgical intensity.

"Who was the recipient?" Adrian asked, his voice dangerously low.

"A shell corporation registered in the Cayman Islands," Marcus replied, tapping a key on his tablet to project the file onto the main wall screen. "Funded directly by an offshore account belonging to Victor Vance."

The air in the room instantly dropped ten degrees.

Even without looking, I felt Adrian's entire posture tense into a coiled spring of pure violence.

"Victor Vance," Adrian repeated, the name tasting like poison on his tongue. "My primary rival for the North Side dock expansion contracts."

"He's been making aggressive moves while you were distracted by domestic fallout, Boss," Marcus added cautiously. "If Vance discovered you had a secret family in Cambridge, using them as leverage to force your resignation from the syndicate would be his masterstroke."

"Vance wouldn't dare touch my blood," Adrian snarled, standing up so fast his leather chair crashed backward onto the rug.

"He already has, Adrian," I interjected, turning away from the window to face them both. "Whether it was Vance or Vanessa who took the photo, my children were stalked outside my laboratory. That isn't a business negotiation; that is a declaration of war."

Adrian looked at me, the unyielding mafia boss temporarily replaced by a man looking at the mother of his children with naked, unfiltered terror.

"You're right," Adrian admitted quietly, walking slowly toward me. "This goes beyond the syndicate code. Vance crossed a line that cannot be uncrossed."

"Then why are we standing here analyzing spreadsheets?" I demanded, stepping into his space. "Where is Vanessa? If Vance took her, she might know where the next strike is coming from."

"Vanessa isn't just a hostage," Marcus spoke up from the console. "We found a secondary encrypted partition on her laptop. It contains extensive financial records proving she was blackmailing Vance for millions before she vanished."

I stared between the two men, the pieces of the puzzle violently shifting into place.

"She wasn't just his first love," I realized aloud, the pieces clicking together. "She was playing both sides."

"She always was ambitious," Adrian muttered bitterly, staring down at the floor. "I was blind to it six years ago, and I was blind to it now."

"Regret is a luxury you don't have time for, Adrian," I said coldly. "My children are sleeping down the hall. I need to know if we are trapped inside this tower or if there is an exit strategy."

Before Adrian could answer, the security intercom on the desk chimed with a harsh, double beep.

"Boss," a frantic voice crackled through the speaker from the ground-floor security checkpoint. "We have an unauthorized perimeter breach in the underground loading bay. Sector four cameras just went dark."

Adrian's hand slammed down onto the master console, activating the facility-wide lockdown protocols.

Thick steel shutters descended over the lower windows with a series of heavy, echoing thuds.

"Vance's cleaning crew," Marcus whispered, drawing his sidearm from his shoulder holster with practiced smoothness. "They found us faster than anticipated."

"They didn't find us by accident," Adrian stated, his eyes locking onto the live security feeds flashing across the monitors. "Someone inside this building just disabled the sector four firewalls."

My heart slammed against my ribs as I thought of Noah and Lily sleeping down the hall.

May you like

"The children," I gasped, bolting toward the study door before Adrian's heavy hand caught my arm.

"Stay behind me," Adrian ordered, his voice brooking zero argument as he drew a custom-engraved Sig Sauer pistol from his hidden holster. "Marcus, secure the penthouse interior. Nobody leaves this floor alive."
