Chapter 6 - THE DAWN RAID ON MICHIGAN AVENUE

The pre-dawn mist hung over Lake Michigan like a shroud of gray silk.

Inside the command briefing room of Moretti Tower, twelve heavily armed men stood in absolute silence.

Every man wore matte-black tactical gear, their faces obscured by ballistic balaclavas.

On the central tactical table, a holographic blueprint of the Michigan Avenue financial plaza pulsed in neon green.

I stood by the reinforced glass door, my arms folded across my chest as I watched Adrian strap a tactical combat harness over his Kevlar vest.

He looked nothing like the suave CEO who attended charity galas on the Gold Coast.

He looked like a warlord preparing to lay siege to an empire.

"The building is registered to Vance Asset Holdings," Marcus Reed explained, pointing a laser at the third-floor executive suite.

"Victor Vance operates three dummy offshore shell corporations through this single floor," Marcus continued.

"Our surveillance indicates that Leo Hale has been holed up inside that server room since midnight," Marcus added.

"He is desperately trying to wipe their offshore wire transfers before the morning stock exchange opens," Marcus noted.

Adrian racked the slide of his custom tactical shotgun with a sharp, metallic click that echoed through the concrete chamber.

"We don't give him the chance," Adrian said, his voice dropping into a register colder than the freezing fog outside.

"Take out the security feeds first," Adrian ordered without looking up.

"Cut their external fiber-optic cables so no encrypted backup can reach the Luciano family in New York," Adrian commanded.

"And what about Leo?" Marcus asked, his hand resting on the grip of his holstered sidearm.

"Bring him back alive," Adrian replied, his dark eyes narrowing into razor-sharp slits.

"He is Vanessa's brother, but more importantly, he is the only walking cipher who can unlock Vance's communications," Adrian stated.

I took two steps forward, stepping directly into Adrian's path before he could sling his primary rifle over his shoulder.

"You're leaving me here blind?" I demanded, my voice cutting through the heavy tension of the armory.

Adrian stopped, looking down at me with an unreadable expression.

"You are safe here in the penthouse with forty armed guards and a blast-resistant vault, Evelyn," he answered quietly.

"Safety is an illusion when someone with your master biometric codes is selling coordinates to New York," I countered.

"I am not an ornament you can lock in a display cabinet while my children's lives are being bargained away," I reminded him.

"I spent six years managing data security protocols for university research networks," I said firmly.

"Patch their server extraction feed directly to the command terminal up here," I instructed.

"If Leo tries to run a counter-shredder script, your shooters won't know how to stop it," I pointed out.

"I will," I said, meeting his dark gray gaze without blinking.

Adrian stared at me for three long, agonizing seconds.

A faint, grim trace of pride flashed across his scarred face.

"Give her the encrypted terminal headset and full administrator access to the feed," Adrian commanded Marcus.

"If she flags a file, preserve it," Adrian ordered his lieutenant.

"Understood, Boss," Marcus nodded, handing me a sleek black earpiece and a portable military-grade tablet.

Adrian took half a step toward me, his gloved hand reaching out to touch my arm before he pulled it back with hesitating restraint.

"Take care of Noah and Lily," he murmured, his voice softening just enough for only me to hear.

"I always have, Adrian," I replied coldly, stepping back to let him pass.

"Come back with the answers, or don't come back at all," I added.

Adrian turned on his heel and signaled his men with a sharp snap of his fingers.

The tactical team filed out into the private subterranean garage, their heavy combat boots drumming a synchronized rhythm of impending destruction.

Ten minutes later, I sat at the central command console in the penthouse, the headset pressed against my ear.

On the primary wall monitor, six body-camera feeds flickered to life in sharp, high-definition night vision.

The convoy of three armored SUVs slipped into the empty dawn streets of downtown Chicago.

They moved like three black panthers gliding through a sleeping forest.

Within eight minutes, the vehicles pulled into the rear service alley of the Michigan Avenue corporate tower.

"Team Alpha, breach the service elevator," Adrian's voice crackled through my earpiece, steady and utterly devoid of fear.

"Team Bravo, take the exterior fire escape and seal the third-floor fire doors," Adrian whispered.

The screen flashed as a thermal charge detonated against the industrial lock of the rear entrance.

The door blew inward with a muffled boom, and Adrian's men flooded the corridor like a tidal wave of shadow.

Two private security guards dressed in Vance's security uniforms barely had time to draw their batons before they were violently slammed against the concrete walls and zip-tied.

"Moving to the third-floor server annex," Marcus reported, his camera bouncing rhythmically as he cleared the staircase.

Inside the server room, the red glow of emergency LED indicators revealed a frantic figure frantically pulling hard drives from a server rack.

It was Leo Hale.

He looked disheveled, terrified, and drenched in cold sweat, his trembling hands shoving solid-state drives into a leather messenger bag.

"Step away from the rack, Leo," Adrian's chilling voice boomed through the open doorway.

Leo gasped, dropping a metal drive casing onto the tiled floor with a loud clang.

He spun around, clutching a small snub-nosed revolver with both shaking hands.

"Adrian! Don't come any closer!" Leo screamed, his voice cracking with sheer hysteria.

"Put the gun down before Marcus takes your hand off," Adrian said calmly, walking into the room without raising his weapon.

"You don't understand what they did to Vanessa!" Leo wept, his back hitting the humming server cabinets.

"They took her, Adrian!" Leo sobbed.

"The New York crew has her at the docks, and if I don't upload the Moretti access keys, they are going to execute her in front of a live feed!" Leo confessed.

"Who is running the docks, Leo?" Adrian demanded, closing the distance between them with slow, terrifying steps.

"Salvatore," Leo whimpered, his fingers trembling so violently on the trigger that the revolver wavered erratically.

"Your cousin Sal made a pact with the Lucianos," Leo revealed.

"He is handing them Chicago from the inside," Leo gasped.

A heavy silence fell over the earpiece, so absolute that I could hear Adrian's measured breathing across the wireless connection.

"Drop the weapon, Leo," Adrian whispered one final time.

Leo didn't drop it; in a blind panic, he raised the barrel toward Adrian's chest.

Before Leo could squeeze the trigger, Marcus moved with blinding speed, striking Leo's wrist with the barrel of his rifle.

The gun clattered to the floor, and Leo was slammed face-down onto the cold server room floor.

"Secure him," Adrian commanded coldly.

"And pack every drive in this room," Adrian added.

"We are going to Calumet Harbor."
