Chapter 4 - THE BREACH AT MIDNIGHT

The heavy oak doors of the master suite shuddered under the violent impact of a suppressed automatic weapon firing directly into the smart-lock mechanism.
Sparks showered across the polished hardwood floor as the digital keypad sparked and died.
I stood frozen behind Adrian, my fingernails digging painfully into my palms as the reinforced door groaned under a second heavy kick.
"Evelyn, get behind the marble pillar in the gallery," Adrian commanded without taking his eyes off the shattered doorway.
"I'm not leaving my children!" I hissed, my maternal instincts overriding every rational survival instinct.
"If you die out here, who takes care of Noah and Lily?" Adrian roared back, his voice cutting through the chaos with absolute authority.
Before I could answer, the door burst inward, splintering into a dozen jagged pieces.
Two masked operatives in black tactical gear poured through the threshold, weapons raised and sweeping the room.
They never even got their sights aligned.
Adrian fired twice with lethal, mechanical precision.
The silenced shots sounded like heavy books slamming onto a desk, and both intruders crumpled silently to the floor, motionless.
Marcus Reed materialized from the corridor behind them, stepping over the bodies with a cold, detached expression.
"Clear," Marcus reported, checking the pulse of the fallen men. "Vance's private contractors. They're wearing encrypted communication earpieces tied directly to an external frequency."
Adrian walked over to the bodies, kneeling down to inspect the tactical patches on their uniforms.
"Not Vance," Adrian murmured, his brow furrowing deeply as he pulled a small metallic insignia from one of the operative's collars.
I crept cautiously out from behind the pillar, staring down at the silver serpent emblem engraved on the metal.
"What is that?" I asked, my voice barely audible above the hum of the emergency ventilation system.
"Not the Chicago syndicate," Adrian replied slowly, standing up and wiping his hands with a handkerchief. "That's the personal crest of the New York Outfit. The Luciano family."
Marcus whistled low through his teeth.
"New York? What do they have to do with Vanessa or the Chicago docks?"
"Everything," Adrian said grimly, walking over to the computer console where the decrypted files were still displayed. "Vance wasn't running an independent operation. He was acting as a front for the New York expansion into our territory."
I felt the walls closing in around me, the academic world I had built in Cambridge feeling like a lifetime away.
"And my children?" I demanded, my voice trembling with suppressed fury. "Were Noah and Lily just collateral damage in a cross-country turf war?"
Adrian turned to face me, his dark eyes filled with a terrifying, cold resolve that I had only ever heard whispered about in underworld legends.
"They weren't collateral damage, Evelyn," Adrian said softly, stepping closer to me. "They were the ultimate leverage. If New York controls Moretti's bloodline, they control Chicago without firing a single shot."
I stepped back, shaking my head in disbelief.
"This is insane," I whispered. "I came back for a conference. I just wanted my children to see the city I grew up in."
"You are safe here," Adrian stated, his hand resting firmly on my shoulder. "Moretti Tower is an impenetrable fortress. Nobody touches my children while I am breathing."
"Your fortress just had its firewalls bypassed from the inside, Adrian!" I snapped, throwing his hand off my shoulder. "Someone on your payroll let them in."
Marcus nodded slowly in grim agreement.
"She's right, Boss. The internal override code used to drop the sector four cameras belongs to someone with Tier-One administrative clearance."
Adrian's jaw clenched so hard I thought his teeth might fracture.
"Find out who logged into that terminal during the blackout," Adrian ordered coldly. "Strip every single guard down to their skin if you have to, but find the rat before sunrise."
"On it," Marcus replied, turning sharply and disappearing down the hallway toward the security command center.
Adrian turned back to me, his expression softening into something devastatingly vulnerable.
"Evelyn... go check on Noah and Lily," he whispered. "Lock the suite door from the inside. I have to handle this."
May you like
I didn't argue.
I turned and ran down the dimly lit hallway toward the children's room, my heart hammering against my ribs with every step.
