Chapter 1 - The Shadow of the Dragon and the Stranger Who Knew My Name

The evening rush inside L’Orso D’Oro, an upscale Italian bistro nestled in the heart of the city, was always loud, fast-paced, and relentless. Alina “Lena” Valdez moved between tables with soft, graceful efficiency, her mind racing through the endless mental checklist of a double shift. At twenty-seven, she was a striking brunette with long, dark hair tied loosely back in a practical clip, dressed in a crisp light-blue button-down shirt and a dark restaurant apron that smelled faintly of garlic, expensive wine, and bleach. Hardworking, financially struggling, and perpetually exhausted from working back-to-back shifts to keep her ailing grandmother’s medical bills paid, she kept her eyes down and focused strictly on her trays and her tables. In the central VIP booth sat forty-nine-year-old Dante Rosselli, a man whose presence alone could alter the atmospheric pressure of an entire room. Dante was an extremely handsome and feared mafia lord whose name commanded absolute silence, instant compliance, and deep terror across three neighboring states. Tall, muscular, and broad-shouldered, he possessed thick dark hair touched with distinguished silver at his temples, a full dark beard meticulously trimmed, a sharp jawline, and a thin, jagged, dangerous scar running along his left cheekbone that hinted at a violent past written in blood. He wore an expensive, custom-tailored burgundy suit over an unbuttoned white silk shirt that revealed glimpses of dark, intricate ink beneath the collar. Seated at adjacent tables, drinking sparkling water while pretending to ignore the patrons, were four broad-shouldered bodyguards in dark bespoke suits, their sharp, paranoid eyes scanning every entry point, kitchen door, and nervous customer continuously. Resting securely in Dante’s massive, heavily tattooed arms sat nine-month-old Leo Rosselli—his baby son, wearing a tiny white dress shirt and a dark silk vest, looking around with large, solemn, observant eyes. Alina approached Dante’s VIP table carrying a tray balanced on her fingertips, her eyes focused on placing a chilled glass of pinot noir down on a coaster. The instant baby Leo saw her face enter his field of vision, his expression transformed from detached indifference into overwhelming, electrifying recognition. He suddenly LEANS violently out of Dante’s secure arms and reaches both tiny hands desperately toward her, his small fingers twitching in anticipation. "WHOA—EASY, little guy!" Alina gasped, her hands instinctively steadying her heavy tray as she took a quick, startled step backward, her heart skipping a beat. Dante immediately pulls Leo back against his broad chest with practiced, protective strength, but the baby immediately twists around again, WHIMPERS with an aching lung-capacity, and stretches both arms toward Alina with absolute, undeniable urgency. The surrounding bodyguards stiffened instantly, their heads snapping toward Alina, their hand positions shifting slightly toward their hidden shoulder holsters as they watched the unprecedented scene unfold with cold suspicion. Leo begins CRYING with sudden, heartbreaking force, reaching harder toward the waitress, his tiny face flushing bright red as tears streamed down his cheeks. Alina, feeling a sudden, inexplicable tug at her soul, hesitantly extends one long, slender finger toward him, unable to bear the sound of a child in such distress. Leo instantly grabs her finger with both tiny, frantic hands, his tears stopping instantly as if by magic, replaced by a deep, happy, soft coo that vibrated against her skin. Dante’s notoriously cold, stoic expression fractured into pure, unadulterated disbelief, his breath catching in his throat. "HE NEVER DOES THAT... not with anyone, not even his nurses," Dante said, his deep baritone stunned, hushed, and profoundly quiet. Alina looked down at the tiny child holding her finger with such fierce attachment, smiling softly despite the surreal tension in the air. But as her gaze drifted upward toward the formidable man holding him, her eyes caught the dark ink exposed above Dante’s unbuttoned white silk shirt—an intricate, soaring, fierce dark DRAGON tattoo weaving up his muscular neck, its scales detailed with crimson ink and its tail curling into a shape she had seen in her worst nightmares. Her face went completely, shockingly PALE, the blood draining from her cheeks in a millisecond, and her warm smile vanished as if it had never existed. She jerked her hand backward with such violent speed that she nearly tripped over her own supportive work shoes. Alina backs away from the VIP table, visibly shaken to her core, her serving tray trembling violently in her hands until the silverware rattled against the porcelain. Dante immediately stands to his full, towering six-foot-three height, his broad shoulders blocking out the warm ambient light of the restaurant chandelier, casting a long, intimidating shadow over her. His sharp, predatory eyes instantly locked onto the sheer, unfeigned terror frozen in her wide brown eyes. "WHY ARE YOU AFRAID OF THIS TATTOO?" Dante asked coldly, his voice echoing with dangerous, irresistible authority that made the neighboring diners lower their forks in sudden silence. Alina freezes in place like a hunted animal caught in headlights, hot tears suddenly filling her wide eyes as her chest heaved with shallow breaths. Dante steps closer while Leo reaches for her again from his arms, whimpering softly, pathetically, and desperately for her return, stretching his tiny arms as if she were his entire world. "MY MOM WARNED ME ABOUT MEN LIKE YOU... she told me that dragon meant death," Alina whispered, her voice terribly shaken, breaking the terrifying silence of the restaurant before she turned and bolted blindly toward the kitchen staff doors.
