Chapter 3 - The Offer in the Empty Restaurant

The main dining room of L’Orso D’Oro looked entirely different under the stark, unblinking glare of the late-night security lights. The white tablecloths gleamed like snow, but all the surrounding chairs were pushed back into the corners, leaving the center of the room entirely open and exposed. Dante Rosselli sat alone at a corner mahogany table, the baby, Leo, now fast asleep against his broad shoulder, wrapped in a cashmere blanket that looked softer than anything Alina had ever touched in her life. Dante was nursing a glass of dark amber whiskey, the amber liquid catching the dim light as he slowly swirled it around the crystal rim. When Alina stepped out of the hallway, her boots clicking softly on the floor, Dante did not look up immediately; he simply took a slow sip of his drink before raising his piercing, intelligent eyes to meet hers. "Sit down, Alina," Dante commanded softly, gesturing to the chair directly across from him with his free hand. Alina hesitated, her hands gripping the straps of her apron until her knuckles turned white, but she walked forward and sank slowly into the wooden chair, keeping as much physical distance between them as the small table allowed. "I don't know what you want from me, Mr. Rosselli. If it's about the baby, he just grabbed my finger by accident. I'm sorry if I caused a scene," Alina said, her voice rushing out in a defensive, nervous blur. Dante let out a low, humorless chuckle that sounded more like a rumble of thunder before leaning forward, resting his heavy forearms on the table. "My son doesn't make mistakes, Alina. And neither do I," Dante said, his voice dropping into a register that sent chills straight down her spine. "In the nine months since my wife passed away during his difficult birth, Leo has screamed bloody murder whenever a stranger comes within ten feet of him. He wouldn't even let his pediatricians touch him without heavy sedatives. Yet the moment you walked past our table, he practically threw himself out of my arms to get to you." Alina swallowed hard, her throat feeling like sandpaper, unable to formulate a logical explanation for something that defied every law of nature she understood. "I... I don't know why. I've never seen him before in my life," she whispered honestly. "I know," Dante replied, his eyes narrowing as he studied her face with an intensity that felt like a physical examination, searching for hidden micro-expressions, deception, or fear. "Which is precisely why I spent the last twenty minutes having my private intelligence team run a complete, deep-dive background check on you." Alina's breath hitched sharply, her eyes widening in indignation and panic. "You ran a background check on me? By what right—?" "By the right of a father who will tear this city apart brick by brick to protect his child," Dante interrupted coldly, cutting her off without raising his voice. "I know you live in a cramped, mold-infested apartment on 4th Street. I know your grandmother, Maria Valdez, is dying of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease at St. Jude's Memorial Hospital. I know your current debt to your landlord is exactly twelve hundred and forty dollars, and your bank account currently holds four dollars and twelve cents." Tears of humiliation and burning anger welled up in Alina's eyes, hot and sharp, but she refused to let them fall in front of this powerful, terrifying stranger. "You have no right to dig into my private life just because your baby has a momentary whim!" she hissed, her voice trembling with righteous fury. Dante didn't flinch; instead, he reached inside his tailored suit jacket and pulled out a heavy, cream-colored checkbook and a gold fountain pen, sliding them across the table toward her with deliberate slowness. "Here is my proposal, Alina," Dante said evenly, his eyes locking onto hers with absolute finality. "Become Leo's live-in nanny, starting tonight. Move into my estate on the Cliffside bluff. Name your own salary—I will clear every single medical debt your grandmother has within the hour, buy her private round-the-clock nursing care, and ensure you never have to work a double shift again." Alina stared at the blank check, then up at Dante's hardened, handsome face, realizing with absolute horror that she was standing at the edge of a moral precipice from which there was no turning back.
