Chapter 4 - The Ghost in the Nursery and the Crescent Locket

The heavy iron gates of the Rosselli Cliffside estate swung inward with a low, hydraulic groan that sounded like a medieval drawbridge yielding to a conqueror. Alina sat in the passenger seat of Dante’s bulletproof black Maybach, staring out the tinted window as the car wound its way up the foggy, serpentine coastal road toward the sprawling stone mansion perched precariously above the churning ocean waves. Her entire worldly possessions—two cardboard boxes containing faded clothes, her grandmother’s old photo albums, and a few paperbacks—sat locked securely in the trunk. When the car finally glided to a halt beneath the grand neoclassical portico, Viktor materialized beside the passenger door, opening it with silent, mechanical precision. "Welcome to the estate, Miss Valdez. The west wing nursery has been prepared for you and the child," Viktor stated impassively, grabbing her modest cardboard boxes with one massive hand as if they weighed nothing at all. Alina stepped out into the biting, salt-laden night air, pulling her thin wool coat tightly around her shoulders as she looked up at the towering Gothic architecture of the mansion. Inside, the interior was a museum of wealth, dark mahogany paneling, towering marble pillars, and priceless oil paintings of stern-faced Italian ancestors watching her every move with painted suspicion. Dante walked briskly ahead, carrying baby Leo—who had finally fallen fast asleep against his father's shoulder, his tiny fist curled into a ball. They ascended a grand double staircase covered in plush burgundy carpet that muffled their footsteps entirely, arriving at a heavy oak double door at the far end of the third-floor hallway. Dante pushed the door open, revealing a nursery so lavish it looked like a royal suite: a hand-carved crib adorned with gold leaf, a massive bay window overlooking the moonlit abyss of the Pacific Ocean, shelves lined with imported French toys, and a private en-suite bathroom tiled in white marble. "This is where you will stay," Dante said, setting Leo gently down into the crib with surprising, delicate tenderness. The baby stirred slightly, let out a soft sigh, and immediately settled back into deep sleep as soon as his father's hand brushed his forehead. Alina stood awkwardly near the doorway, clutching her silver crescent locket beneath her shirt, her chest tight with claustrophobia and doubt. "Why me, Mr. Rosselli? Be honest," Alina asked quietly, breaking the heavy silence of the opulent room. "There are thousands of professional nannies in this state with degrees in early childhood education, background checks clear of poverty, and years of experience. Why drag a tired waitress into your fortress?" Dante turned slowly from the crib, walking toward her with measured, heavy steps until he stood just inches away, towering over her petite frame. "Because Leo doesn't care about degrees, Alina. And because when you looked at my dragon tattoo earlier tonight, your face didn't just show fear—it showed recognition," Dante whispered, his voice dark, probing, and laced with suppressed danger. "You know something about the mark on my skin, don't you? Something your mother told you before she died." Alina’s breath caught in her throat, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped animal as she realized her mother’s dying secret had just placed a target squarely on her own back.
