Chapter 2 - The Midnight Audit and the Secret Safe in Room 402

The heavy swing doors of the L’Orso D’Oro kitchen slammed shut behind Alina, muffling the low murmur of the dining room into a dull, rhythmic thud of stainless steel and rushing water. Her chest rose and fell in jagged, violent gasps as she dropped her serving tray onto the prep counter with a metallic clatter that made the head chef curse in Italian. "Valdez! What the hell is wrong with you? Table four is waiting for their check!" Chef Mateo barked, wiping flour off his thick forearms, but the moment he saw the ghost-white pallor of her face, his scowl faltered. "Hey... kid, you look like you just saw a ghost. Go sit down in the back office for ten minutes before you pass out." Alina didn't answer; she just nodded mutely, her fingers still tingling where the baby had held her, and stumbled backward into the cramped, windowless administrative office at the end of the corridor. She locked the heavy wooden door behind her, leaned her forehead against the cool, scarred surface, and let out a long, trembling breath that felt like glass in her throat. That tattoo—she had only ever seen drawings of it in the frayed leather-bound journal her mother, Elena Valdez, had hidden beneath floorboards before she died three years ago. Her mother had always spoken in feverish whispers during her final months, warning Alina never to trust men with inked scales, never to step foot in the downtown financial district, and above all, never to let anyone see the small, faded silver locket shaped like a crescent moon that Alina wore tucked securely beneath her uniform shirt. Now, sitting at the cluttered metal desk under the hum of a flickering fluorescent light, Alina pulled the locket out from her collar, clutching the cold metal as if it could anchor her fading sanity. But her brief sanctuary was brutally interrupted when her phone buzzed against the desk surface—a text message from her landlord, Mr. Henderson: Rent is five days overdue, Alina. If I don't have the twelve hundred dollars by tomorrow noon, your grandmother's hospital oxygen concentrator is going to be repossessed. Panic surged through her veins, hot and sharp, overshadowing even the residual terror of Dante Rosselli's face. She needed money, and she needed it immediately; the restaurant tips wouldn't cover even a fraction of the debt, and her shift was only half over. Standing up with a fierce, desperate resolve, she unlocked the office door, intending to return to the floor and finish her grueling double shift, only to freeze dead in her tracks in the hallway. Standing right outside the office door, leaning casually against the tiled wall with his arms crossed over his expansive chest, was Dante Rosselli's primary enforcer—a hulking brute named Viktor whose nose had been broken so many times it resembled a jagged boulder. "Mr. Rosselli wants a word with you, Miss Valdez," Viktor said, his voice like grinding stones, blocking any possible route of escape. Alina tried to step back into the office, but Viktor's massive hand casually caught the edge of the door, holding it wide open with terrifying ease. "I'm working. I have tables to clear," Alina stammered, her voice shaking despite her best efforts to project confidence. "You don't have tables anymore, Miss Valdez. Mr. Rosselli bought out the restaurant for the rest of the evening. Every single patron has already been escorted out through the rear exits," Viktor replied smoothly, gesturing down the empty, silent corridor where the ambient restaurant noise had completely vanished, replaced by an unnatural, suffocating quiet. Heart pounding against her ribs like a trapped bird, Alina realized she had nowhere to run, no manager to save her, and no choice left in the world. She walked slowly down the empty hallway back toward the main dining area, her rubber-soled shoes squeaking softly on the freshly mopped tile, dreading what the mafia boss could possibly want with a tired, indebted waitress from the wrong side of the city.
