Chapter 13 - The Reconciliation of Blood and Shadow

The armored convoy returned to the Rosselli Cliffside estate just as the first pale light of dawn began to paint the horizon in shades of bruised purple and gold. Inside the grand foyer, the atmosphere was entirely transformed from the suffocating paranoia of previous days. Madame Vance and her co-conspirators had been safely locked away in federal custody, their network dismantled by the unassailable evidence contained within the silver journal. Alina walked slowly up the grand double staircase, her legs heavy with physical and emotional exhaustion, but her mind clear for the first time in her entire life. When she pushed open the door to the royal nursery, she found baby Leo awake and sitting up in his gold-leaf crib, babbling happily as a private nurse tried to feed him. The instant Leo saw Alina walk through the door, his little face lit up with radiant joy, and he stretched out both arms with the exact same urgent desperation he had shown in the bistro. Alina scooped him up into her arms, burying her face in his soft baby curls as hot, relieved tears finally spilled over her cheeks. A soft knock at the open nursery door made her look up to find Dante standing there, watching them with an expression of profound tenderness that softened his harsh, scarred features. He had a white medical bandage wrapped around his left forearm where a stray bullet had grazed him during the firefight, but he stood tall, his broad shoulders relaxed. "The hospital confirmed your grandmother’s treatment is fully underway; the doctors say her recovery is progressing faster than expected," Dante said softly, stepping into the room and gently resting his heavy, tattooed hand on Alina's shoulder. Alina turned her face upward, meeting his intense gaze without fear, feeling the heavy burden of the past finally lift from her soul. "Thank you, Dante... for keeping your promise, and for letting me help bring the truth to light," she whispered, her voice trembling slightly with emotion. Dante smiled faintly, his fingers gently brushing a stray lock of dark hair away from her forehead. "You didn't just help, Alina. You brought the light back into a house that hasn't seen the sun in twenty-five years."
