Chapter 7 - The Crimson Ink and the Midnight Confession

The digital clock on the bedside table glowed a harsh 4:15 AM when a soft, hesitant knock echoed at Alina’s bedroom door, followed immediately by the slow, heavy click of the latch turning. Alina, sitting upright in bed with her blanket clutched tightly to her chest, watched as the door eased open to reveal Dante Rosselli himself. He had discarded his tailored suit jacket; his white silk shirt was open further down his chest, exposing the full, terrifying expanse of the dark dragon tattoo that coiled and twisted across his muscular shoulder and up his thick neck like a living creature of nightmares. In his arms, baby Leo was awake, blinking sleepily with wide, dark eyes that mirrored his father’s intense gaze. "He wouldn't stop crying for you," Dante said quietly, his deep voice devoid of its usual boardroom authority, carrying instead a weariness that made him look every bit of his forty-nine years. Alina swallowed hard, her heart pounding against her ribs as she stared at the man whose family had allegedly reduced her mother’s world to cinders. "I'm... I'm awake," she whispered, her voice tight with suppressed fear and unresolved anger. Dante walked slowly into the room, his towering frame casting a long shadow across the floorboards, and gently laid the baby down on the edge of Alina’s bed. Leo immediately scrambled across the mattress with clumsy infant energy, diving straight into Alina’s lap and letting out a happy, bubbling coo as he grabbed her pajama sleeve with both hands. Alina instinctively wrapped her arms around the child, shielding him slightly as she looked up to find Dante’s piercing eyes fixed squarely on her face. "You heard them, didn't you?" Dante asked bluntly, the question hanging in the air like a loaded gun. Alina froze, her breath catching in her throat. "Heard who?" she played dumb, her voice shaking despite her efforts. "Don't insult my intelligence, Alina. Viktor saw the shadow of your robe on the balcony railing. And Madame Vance has already left the estate," Dante stated, stepping closer until the clean, expensive scent of cedar and dark amber enveloped her. "You heard what she said about Naples. About the Valdez name." Tears of fierce frustration spilled over Alina’s eyelashes, hot and unbidden. "She said your family burned my family to the ground! She said the dragon on your neck is the mark of monsters who left my mother with nothing!" she cried out, her voice cracking with the weight of a lifetime of grief and poverty. Dante didn't flinch, nor did he raise his voice in defense; instead, he reached up with a scarred, heavy hand, slowly tracing the edge of the dragon ink on his neck. "My father wore that tattoo, Alina. And twenty-five years ago, he gave an order that tore Naples apart," Dante said, his voice dropping to a harsh, gravelly whisper. "I spent my entire adult life trying to tear down the corrupt pillars of what my father built. But when I saw you at that bistro—and when my son chose you out of the entire world—I realized the past isn't buried in the ashes, Alina. It's sitting right here in front of me."
