Chapter 11 - The Crossfire and the Phantom Bullet

The sudden shattering of the overhead fluorescent light plunged warehouse three into an abyss of absolute, suffocating darkness. Alina gasped as the sharp pop of a sniper rifle echoed off the corrugated steel roof, followed immediately by the terrifying hiss of a bullet embedding itself into a wooden crate just inches from her shoulder. Dante didn't hesitate for a microsecond; with lightning-fast reflexes born of decades in the brutal underworld, he lunged sideways, sweeping Alina off her feet and pulling her down behind a thick, reinforced concrete pillar. "Stay down, Alina! Do not move an inch!" Dante ordered, his voice sharp as broken glass, his body forming an absolute shield over hers. Across the cavernous warehouse, muzzle flashes erupted in rapid succession as Moretti mercenaries opened fire from the upper catwalks, trying to cover Madame Vance’s escape. Viktor and the Rosselli enforcers returned fire with disciplined, professional precision, the deafening roar of automatic gunfire filling the night air with the smell of cordite, smoke, and burning steel. Alina pressed her face against Dante’s broad shoulder, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs as she clutched the silver journal in her pocket like a lifeline. In the chaos of the flashing gunfire, she caught a glimpse of Madame Vance’s dark trench coat slipping frantically toward the rear service exit that led directly out to the dark wooden docks. "She’s getting away, Dante! Toward the water!" Alina shouted over the deafening din of combat, pointing a trembling finger toward the fleeing traitor. Dante’s eyes flashed with lethal determination; he handed Alina his secondary sidearm with a quick, instructions-free grip, checked his clip, and surged out from behind the concrete cover. With a handful of trusted men flanking him, Dante charged through the crossfire, cutting off Vance’s escape route before she could reach the getaway speedboat idling on the dark, churning waves of the bay.
