Chapter 8 - The Hidden Journal and the Truth Beneath the Floorboards

The morning sun broke through the heavy coastal fog, casting long, fractured rays of golden light across the opulent library of the Rosselli estate. Alina sat at a massive mahogany desk, baby Leo napping peacefully in a cushioned bassinet beside her, while Dante stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows looking out over the roaring ocean. He had spent the last two hours explaining the labyrinthine web of betrayal within the syndicate, detailing how rival factions like the Moretti family were actively trying to destabilize his reign by resurrecting old blood feuds. But words weren't enough; Alina needed physical proof before she could trust a single syllable escaping the lips of a mafia lord. Leaving the mansion under heavy guard was out of the question, but Dante had done something unexpected—he had sent Viktor to retrieve the remaining cardboard boxes and personal effects from Alina’s old apartment on 4th Street, including her late grandmother’s worn leather-bound trunk. Now, sitting before her on the mahogany desk, was the very trunk her mother had guarded with her life. Alina’s trembling fingers undid the rusted brass clasp and lifted the heavy lid, pushing aside stacks of faded medical bills, yellowed newspaper clippings, and old photographs until her fingers brushed against something hard and cold wrapped in a velvet cloth. She pulled it out and unwrapped it: a heavy, beautifully engraved silver journal with a locking clasp that bore the exact same intricate dragon insignia etched into Dante’s skin—except this one was stamped with a royal seal. Dante turned from the window, his footsteps silent on the thick Persian rug, and stopped dead in his tracks when he saw the silver journal in her hands. "My father's personal ledger," Dante breathed, his eyes widening in genuine shock. "It was stolen the night the Naples estate burned down. Everyone thought it was destroyed in the fire." Alina looked up, her brown eyes flashing with a mix of triumph and deep-seated suspicion. "My mother didn't steal it to profit from it, Mr. Rosselli. She saved it because it contains the names of every single corrupt official, every assassin, and every betrayer who orchestrated the massacre—including the men who pulled the trigger on my grandfather." She popped the fragile silver clasp with a small hairpin, flipping open the brittle, yellowed pages filled with tight, elegant Italian handwriting. As her eyes scanned the first entry, a cold realization washed over her: the signature at the bottom of the catastrophic order wasn't Dante’s father alone—it was co-signed by the very person who had just stood in this mansion whispering threats in the dark. Madame Vance.
