Chapter 10 - The Confrontation in the Shadows

Arthur’s eyes gleamed with a desperate, unhinged light as he advanced slowly across the dusty floorboards, the heavy brass poker dragging against the wooden planks with a grating scrape.

"You really thought you could outsmart me, didn't you?" Arthur sneered, his voice echoing eerily in the cavernous attic space.

"You find a dusty old book and think it saves us? It doesn't save anyone, Evelyn. It just gives me the final piece I need to disappear."

Julian stood up slowly, stepping directly in front of Evelyn to shield her from his deranged brother, his eyes narrowing into cold, calculating slits.

"Put the poker down, Arthur," Julian warned, his voice dropping into a dangerous, low register that commanded authority.

"You've already lost. The SEC has frozen your accounts, the media has the fraud story, and the board is calling an emergency vote for tomorrow morning."

"I haven't lost anything!" Arthur screamed, lunging forward with sudden, explosive violence, swinging the heavy brass poker directly at Julian’s head.

Julian ducked instinctively, the heavy metal whistling through the air just inches above his hair, crashing into a stack of wooden crates and sending splintered wood flying in every direction.

Before Arthur could recover his balance, Julian drove a powerful straight punch into his brother's stomach.

Arthur gasped, the air rushing violently from his lungs as he staggered backward, tripping over a rolled-up rug and crashing hard onto the dusty floorboards.

The heavy brass poker slipped from his trembling hand, clattering noisily across the floor and coming to rest near Evelyn’s feet.

Evelyn didn't hesitate; she quickly kicked the poker away into the deep shadows beneath a nearby table, ensuring Arthur couldn't reach it again.

Arthur groaned, clutching his stomach as he curled into a fetal position, his breath coming in ragged, painful gasps.

"It’s over, Arthur," Julian said, standing over his defeated brother, his expression devoid of pity, filled only with a profound, exhausted disappointment.

"You built your entire life on sand, and now the tide has come in."

Arthur glared up at them, his face twisted in a mask of pure hatred, before letting out a bitter, hacking laugh that echoed hauntingly in the dark attic.

"You think Victoria Vance is going to stop with me?" Arthur wheezed, blood trickling from the corner of his mouth.

"She doesn't want the estate, Julian... she wants the destruction of every single person bearing the Sterling name. And she's already making her next move."

Julian’s expression hardened instantly. He turned to Evelyn, grabbing her hand firmly.

"We need to get to the boardroom now," Julian said urgently.

"The emergency vote starts in twenty minutes. If Victoria has a plant on the board, she could push through a hostile takeover while we're locked up in this attic."

Evelyn clutched the genuine ledger tightly against her chest, nodding resolutely as they turned and hurried down the dark attic stairs, leaving Arthur behind in the shadows of his own destruction.
