Chapter 6 - The Mask Slips and the Ultimatum in the Study

Evelyn stared at the yellowed parchment dangling carelessly from Arthur’s fingers, her mind violently processing the terrifying reality of the situation.

The mask of the charming, benevolent philanthropist had completely vanished, replaced by the hardened, calculating gaze of a man fighting for his absolute survival.

"You took it from the safe," Evelyn stated, her voice surprisingly steady despite the violent storm raging inside her chest.

Arthur let out a dry, humorless laugh, stepping fully into the study and closing the heavy mahogany door behind him with a soft, ominous click.

"I didn't take it from the safe, Evelyn," Arthur corrected softly, walking toward her with measured, deliberate strides.

"I put it there in the first place."

The confession hung in the suffocating air of the study, heavier and more lethal than any physical weapon.

Evelyn backed away slowly until the edge of the heavy oak desk pressed firmly against her lower back, blocking any further retreat.

"You... you forged your own family's history?" she whispered, horror dawning in her eyes as the chaotic puzzle pieces finally locked into place.

"Why would you do something so catastrophic? It completely destroys the legal legitimacy of the Sterling estate!"

Arthur stopped just a few feet away from her, his blue eyes flashing with a manic, desperate energy.

"It doesn't destroy the estate, Evelyn; it secures it against a much greater threat," Arthur hissed, his voice rising in pitch before he forcibly reined it back in.

"My father left a secret codicil in his final will—a codicil that stated if any direct heir proved financially irresponsible or morally compromised, the entire empire would pass directly to Julian."

Evelyn’s breath hitched. "Julian..."

"Yes, my golden-boy brother," Arthur sneered, the jealousy and hatred dripping from his words like venom.

"Julian has been slowly buying out the minority shareholders behind my back for the past three years. He wants my throne, Evelyn. He wants everything I’ve built."

"So you created a fake crisis?" Evelyn demanded, her intellect cutting through his frantic rationalization.

"You planted a forged document linking the family to a fraudulent land claim, knowing Julian would find it and investigate, so you could trap him in a conspiracy of your own making?"

Arthur smiled, a chilling, triumphant expression that made Evelyn’s stomach churn.

"Not just Julian, my dear," Arthur whispered, leaning in closer until she could smell the faint trace of scotch on his breath.

"You as well. The document bears your archival signature as the authenticator. When the board discovers the fraud, Julian will be discredited as my co-conspirator, and you will take the fall for treason against the family."

Evelyn stared at him, realizing with absolute terror that the man she had called her husband for five years was a sociopath willing to sacrifice anyone—including his own wife—to protect his fragile ego.

Before she could formulate a response, the study door flew open with a violent crash that rattled the leaded glass windows.

Julian stood in the doorway, his chest heaving, his dark eyes locked entirely onto Arthur with the terrifying fury of an apex predator cornered in his own den.

"Let her go, Arthur," Julian commanded, his voice a low, dangerous growl that commanded the entire room.
