Chapter 8 - The Public Fall and the Media Firestorm

The breaking news hit the financial markets and media networks with the devastating impact of a category-five hurricane before the sun had even fully set over Manhattan.

Sterling Enterprises Facing Imminent Collapse Amid Historic Land Fraud Scandal.

The screaming headlines flashed across every television screen in Times Square, illuminating the darkened streets in harsh, glaring reds and blues.

Inside the private study, the physical fight between the brothers had abruptly stopped the moment Evelyn relayed Victoria’s message over the phone.

Arthur stood frozen by the bookshelf, his face pale, staring blankly at the wall as the reality of his catastrophic gamble finally set in.

By trying to frame Julian and trap his wife, Arthur had unwittingly handed the ultimate weapon to Victoria Vance, who had leaked the forged documents directly to the financial press.

"She ruined us," Arthur whispered, his voice cracking with sudden, desperate panic as he grabbed his phone and furiously dialed his public relations team.

"Get me the PR crisis manager immediately! Tell them to issue a statement denying—"

"There is no denying this, Arthur," Julian interrupted, his voice cutting through the panic like a sheet of ice.

Julian walked over to the window, parting the velvet drapes just enough to look down at the front gates of the estate.

Even from this distance, the flashing lights of news vans, satellite trucks, and packs of aggressive reporters were clearly visible, swarming the perimeter like a swarm of locusts.

"Victoria didn't just leak a document," Julian continued grimly, turning back to face them.

"She filed an emergency injunction with the Securities and Exchange Commission. All Sterling corporate accounts have been frozen indefinitely pending a federal fraud investigation."

Evelyn collapsed into the wingback chair, the sheer exhaustion and betrayal catching up to her all at once.

Her academic career, her reputation, her quiet life—all of it had been completely incinerated in less than forty-eight hours because she had married into a family built on lies and vengeance.

"What do we do now, Julian?" Evelyn asked, her voice hollow, carrying a weight of profound defeat.

Julian walked over to her, his expression unreadable, though the intensity in his dark eyes remained entirely undiminished.

"We don't run, and we don't hide," Julian replied firmly, extending a hand down to her.

"We fight back. But to beat Victoria Vance at her own game, we need to find the original ledger from eighteen-ninety-two—the one authentic document your grandfather hid before he died."

Arthur let out a bitter, manic laugh from the corner of the room.

"The original ledger doesn't exist, Julian!" Arthur shouted, his voice trembling with hysteria.

"Grandfather burned it after the railroad collapse! There is no proof left to save us!"

Julian ignored his brother entirely, his eyes fixed steadily on Evelyn.

"Arthur is lying," Julian said quietly. "He doesn't know where the old man kept his private journals, but you do, Evelyn. You spent months cataloging the estate's deep archives."

Evelyn looked up at Julian, a sudden realization flashing through her tired mind.
