Chapter 11 - The Boardroom Battleground and the Midnight Proxy

The sleek, glass-walled boardroom on the fortieth floor of Sterling Tower was bathed in the harsh, fluorescent glow of emergency overhead lighting.

Outside, the Manhattan skyline was shrouded in a thick, midnight fog, mirroring the palpable gloom inside the room.

The mahogany conference table, usually reserved for quiet triumphs and lucrative mergers, was surrounded by twelve tense, anxious board members.

Whispers buzzed nervously among them like angry hornets, all of them reacting to the breaking news of the SEC investigation and the leaked land fraud scandal.

At the head of the table sat Chairman Harrison, an aging, silver-haired corporate veteran whose loyalty to the Sterling family spanned three decades.

As the heavy glass doors swung open, every head in the room snapped around with collective shock.

Julian walked in first, his posture rigid, radiating absolute, unyielding authority in his tailored black suit.

Evelyn followed closely behind him, her head held high, carrying the heavy, leather-bound eighteenth-century ledger securely in her arms like a shield against the mounting storm.

"Mr. Sterling," Chairman Harrison began, his voice trembling slightly with suppressed agitation as he stood up from his leather chair.

"Given the unprecedented nature of the financial leaks and the federal investigation, the board was just about to initiate an emergency vote to strip the family of executive control."

"Sit down, Harrison," Julian commanded, his voice cutting through the murmurs like a scalpel.

He pulled out a chair beside the chairman and motioned for Evelyn to take her seat right beside him.

"Before this board takes any illegal or reactionary action based on fabricated media leaks, you need to see what is actually inside this room."

Evelyn stepped forward, placing the heavy, gold-embossed ledger down onto the center of the polished mahogany table with a resounding thud.

She flipped open the heavy cover, revealing the immaculate, unblemished cursive handwriting of the original family patriarch.

"This is the true, unedited foundational ledger of the Sterling estate," Evelyn announced, her voice ringing clear and steady across the silent room.

"The document leaked to the press by Victoria Vance was a calculated forgery designed to manufacture a crisis of legitimacy."

A wave of murmurs rippled through the board members as Harrison leaned in closer, his old eyes scanning the authentic watermarks and signatures on the yellowed pages.

"If this is genuine..." Harrison muttered, visibly stunned. "Then the land claims cited in the federal indictment are entirely baseless."

"Precisely," Julian intervened, leaning forward and resting his hands flat on the table.

"The fraud was orchestrated from within our own ranks to manufacture a panic and force a hostile takeover."

Suddenly, the heavy glass double doors swung open with a smooth, silent glide.

A collective gasp echoed around the boardroom.

Dressed in a stunning, razor-sharp emerald-green pantsuit that practically screamed power and vengeance, Victoria Vance stepped into the room.

Behind her walked Marcus Vance, holding a thick legal briefcase, flanked by two corporate security guards.

"A touching family tragedy," Victoria purred, her smooth, melodic voice echoing off the glass walls as she walked slowly toward the head of the table.

"Too bad it’s completely irrelevant. Mr. Harrison, if you check your corporate tablet right now, you’ll see that Vance Enterprise has officially acquired thirty-one percent of Sterling voting stock through third-party proxies."

Victoria stopped just a few feet away from Julian, her dark eyes flashing with a triumphant, vindictive fire.

"The board doesn't need to vote on legitimacy anymore, Julian," Victoria smiled coldly.

"As the majority voting stakeholder, I am officially calling for the immediate termination of the Sterling family's executive powers. Effective immediately, I am taking over as CEO."
