Chapter 3 - The Midnight Confession in the East Wing

The grandfather clock struck midnight, casting long, eerie shadows across the deserted corridors of the Sterling estate.
The gala had finally ended, the drunken guests having departed into the chilly autumn night, leaving behind an eerie, heavy silence.
Evelyn walked swiftly down the dimly lit hallway of the east wing, her high heels removed and carried silently in her left hand.
Her nerves were frayed, pulled as taut as violin strings, every creak of the old wooden floorboards sounding like a gunshot in the dead of night.
She reached the heavy oak door of the secondary library—a secluded room that Arthur rarely used, preferring the main study downstairs.
Taking a deep breath, she turned the brass doorknob and slipped inside, quietly clicking the latch back into place.
A small reading lamp was lit in the corner, casting a warm, golden glow over a wingback leather armchair.
Julian was already there, sitting with one long leg crossed over the other, nursing a glass of bourbon.
He looked up as she entered, setting the crystal glass down on the mahogany side table with a faint clink.
"You took your time," Julian observed, his voice a low rumble in the quiet room.
"Arthur insisted on questioning me about our conversation on the dance floor," Evelyn whispered, walking over to the fireplace and resting her palms on the cold marble mantelpiece.
"He wanted to know why you and I were talking about family history during a charity gala."
Julian stood up, crossing the room with silent, predatory grace until he was standing just behind her.
She could feel the heat radiating off his body, a stark contrast to the ice in her own veins.
"And what did you tell him?" Julian asked, his voice brushing against her neck like a feather.
"I told him you were threatening to cut off the foundation's funding if he didn't approve the historical preservation grant," Evelyn replied, turning her head slightly to look up at him.
"A lie, but a plausible one. Arthur bought it, though his eyes told me he suspects I'm hiding something else."
Julian let out a low, humorless chuckle, stepping closer until she was effectively trapped between his chest and the marble mantel.
"Arthur has always been paranoid about losing control," Julian murmured, reaching out to gently brush a stray lock of dark hair away from her cheek.
His gloved fingertips brushed her skin, sending a sudden, electric shock straight to her core.
Evelyn stiffened, her breath catching in her throat, acutely aware of the dangerous intimacy of the gesture.
"We shouldn't be doing this, Julian," she whispered, her words lacking any real conviction.
"Arthur is your brother."
"Arthur cares about the Sterling name and his political ambitions, Evelyn," Julian countered, his dark eyes darkening as he leaned in closer, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper.
"He doesn't care about you. He never has. You were chosen as a prop to complete his polished, respectable image."
The words hit her like a physical blow because deep down, she had known it was true from the very beginning.
She had entered this marriage believing she could be a partner, only to realize she was merely an ornament in a gilded cage.
"If Arthur didn't put the forged document in the safe, and Margaret denies knowing anything about it, then who did?" Evelyn asked, desperately trying to steer the conversation back to the mystery before she lost herself entirely in the magnetic pull of the man standing before her.
Julian’s jaw tightened, the anger flaring back to life in his eyes.
"There is a third player in this game," Julian said slowly.
"Someone who has access to the ancestral archives, someone with a personal grudge against the Sterling dynasty."
"Who?" Evelyn demanded.
"Victoria Vance," Julian replied, the name falling like a curse between them.
Evelyn gasped, stepping back as the pieces of the terrifying puzzle suddenly fell into place.
Victoria Vance—the brilliant, ruthless corporate raider and former fiancée of Arthur Sterling, a woman who had been publicly humiliated and cast out of high society five years ago.
"She's back," Evelyn breathed, the horror dawning on her.

"She never left," Julian corrected grimly.
"And she's using that forged document to tear this family apart from the inside out."
