Chapter 9 - The Ascent to the Attic and the Secret Compartment

The east wing attic was a forgotten wasteland of dust, cobwebs, and heavy shadows, untouched by the modern world for over half a century.
The floorboards groaned in protest under Evelyn’s and Julian’s footsteps as they navigated the labyrinth of forgotten furniture draped in white dust sheets.
The air was thick with the scent of old wood, mothballs, and decaying paper, making every breath feel heavy and restricted.
Julian carried a high-powered tactical flashlight, cutting a brilliant beam of light through the suffocating gloom, while Evelyn clutched a brass key tightly in her gloved hand.
"Are you certain it's here?" Julian asked, keeping his voice low as he swept the beam across a row of stacked, decaying crates.
"I’m as certain as I can be," Evelyn replied, her voice echoing softly in the cavernous space.
"When I was cataloging Grandfather Sterling’s personal correspondence two years ago, I found a cryptic reference in his final letter to a 'chest that holds the true bloodline.'"
They reached the far corner of the attic, where a massive, iron-reinforced leather steamer trunk sat half-hidden beneath a mountain of old velvet curtains.
Evelyn knelt down in the thick dust, coughing slightly as the particles swirled in the flashlight beam.
She inserted the small brass key into the rusted lock.
With a satisfying, heavy click, the lock gave way.
Julian stepped in, using his broad shoulders and strong grip to help her lift the heavy, stubborn lid.
The lid creaked open, releasing a stale puff of trapped air that smelled intensely of old leather and dried lavender.
Inside sat piles of yellowed photograph albums, military medals from the First World War, and stacks of faded correspondence tied together with rotting silk ribbons.
Evelyn’s hands moved frantically through the layers, tossing aside non-essential items until her fingers brushed against something hard and cold tucked into the very bottom lining of the trunk.
"I found it," she whispered triumphantly, pulling out a heavy, leather-bound ledger with brass corners and the genuine, unblemished Sterling family crest embossed in gold leaf on the cover.
Julian knelt beside her, shining the light directly onto the cover.
"Open it," he commanded softly.
Evelyn unlatched the brass clasp and slowly turned the heavy pages, her heart racing as she scanned the elegant, cursive handwriting of the patriarch who had founded the dynasty over a century ago.
Every property deed, every financial transaction, and every true familial lineage was meticulously recorded here, completely devoid of the forged lies Arthur had manufactured.
"This proves the estate belongs to the direct line, and it completely invalidates Victoria's fabricated claims," Evelyn breathed in sheer relief.
Suddenly, the heavy door at the top of the attic stairs creaked open, breaking the silence of the dusty room.
A tall silhouette stepped out of the stairwell, blocking their only exit.

"I'm afraid you won't be taking that ledger anywhere, my dear sister-in-law," a smooth, chillingly calm voice echoed through the attic.
Arthur stepped forward into the flashlight beam, holding a heavy, solid-brass fireplace poker in his right hand.
