Chapter 10 - The Gala of the Syndicate

The Grand Plaza Hotel was transformed into a glittering fortress of wealth, corruption, and absolute power on Saturday night.
Outside the marble entrance, dozens of photographers and news cameras flashed behind velvet ropes as limousines deposited the city's most dangerous and influential figures.
Men in tailored bespoke tuxedos and women dripping in millions of dollars of Harry Winston diamonds moved through the gilded ballroom.
In the center of the room, Don Emilio Caruso stood holding a flute of champagne, flanked by Valentina, who looked triumphant in an icy-silver satin gown with an open back.
Valentina had spent the entire evening whispering to the wives of district judges and syndicate leaders, claiming that Sebastian Moretti had lost his sanity and was hiding in shame after their broken engagement.
"He won't even show his face tonight," Valentina sneered to a circle of high-society matriarchs.
"He knows he has humiliated himself beyond repair."
At that exact moment, the massive brass doors at the top of the grand staircase swung open with an echoing thud.
The master of ceremonies cleared his throat, his voice trembling slightly over the microphone.
"Announcing Don Sebastian Moretti, head of the Moretti Family."
The orchestra ceased playing instantly.
A hush fell over the three hundred guests in the ballroom, every head turning upward toward the grand staircase.
Sebastian stood at the top of the stairs, looking every inch the sovereign ruler of the city in a midnight-black tuxedo that emphasized his broad shoulders and commanding presence.
But he was not alone.
Holding his arm, stepping forward into the glittering light of the chandeliers, was Elise Whitmore.
A collective gasp echoed across the vast ballroom floor.
Elise took everyone's breath away.
She wore a custom-tailored, off-the-shoulder gown of rich, velvety emerald green that hugged every magnificent curve of her body with unapologetic sensuality and grace.
Her dark hair was styled in soft, cascading Hollywood waves, her neck bare save for the proud line of her collarbones, and her skin glowing with radiant warmth.
On her right hand, catching the chandelier light with ancient authority, sat the heavy gold signet ring of the Moretti matriarch.
She did not look nervous.
She did not look out of place.
She looked like an empress descending to survey her court.
Sebastian placed his gloved hand over hers, his eyes scanning the crowd below with cold, predatory triumph until his gaze locked directly onto Emilio and Valentina.
"Keep your chin up, my love," Sebastian whispered softly beside her ear.
"You own this room."
"I was born ready for this, Sebastian," Elise murmured back, a dazzling, confident smile lighting up her face as they began their descent down the marble staircase.
The guests parted like the Red Sea as Sebastian and Elise reached the ballroom floor.
Whispers broke out like wildfire—not mocking, but filled with shock, awe, and reluctant admiration.
Valentina’s champagne flute shattered on the marble floor beneath her trembling fingers, the cold crystal shards scattering across her silver shoes.
Her face was chalk-white, her eyes bulging in pure, unadulterated disbelief.
"She... she's wearing the Matriarch's ring," an elderly mafia dowager gasped behind Valentina.
"That ring hasn't been worn since Rosa Moretti was buried twenty years ago!"
Sebastian led Elise directly through the crowd, stopping mere inches from Emilio and Valentina.
The tension was thick enough to choke on.
"Good evening, Emilio," Sebastian said smoothly, his deep voice carrying across the silent ballroom.
"It seems your reports of my absence were somewhat exaggerated."
Emilio stared at the emerald-clad woman beside Sebastian, his jaw working silently, the full political reality crashing down upon his empire.
Sebastian had not brought a mistress.
He had not brought a temporary companion.
He had brought a future wife, sealed with the most sacred relic of the Moretti dynasty.
Valentina stepped forward, her voice trembling with hysteria.
"Sebastian, this is an insult to every family in this room! You bring this... this servant into our sanctuary?"
Sebastian’s expression darkened into absolute, lethal stillness.
He turned slightly, letting his arm slide firmly around Elise’s waist, pulling her flush against his side before the entire city's ruling class.
"Her name is Elise Whitmore," Sebastian announced, his voice ringing with absolute, undisputed authority through the silence of the hall.
"She is the woman who saved my father's life, and she is the woman who holds my heart."
He paused, his eyes sweeping across the hundreds of frozen faces in the ballroom.

"Anyone who disrespects her, disrespects the Moretti family."
"And anyone who crosses her," Sebastian added, looking straight into Emilio Caruso's pale, terrified eyes, "will answer directly to me."
