Chapter 5 - The Dinner of Broken Plates and Shifting Tides

The formal dining room on Friday night looked like a scene from a Renaissance painting, illuminated by dozens of flickering candles set in heavy silver candelabras.

The long mahogany table was draped in imported white lace, laden with crystal glassware and silver silverware.

Giuseppe Moretti sat at the head of the table for the first time in seven years, looking remarkably sharp in a dark velvet smoking jacket.

To his right sat Don Emilio Caruso, his expression rigid and calculating.

To his left sat Valentina, wearing an emerald silk gown that shimmered under the candlelight, glaring across the table with undisguised malice.

Sebastian sat at the opposite end of the table, his posture rigid, his eyes locked on the empty seat beside him.

The heavy oak doors swung open, and Elise entered carrying a massive silver platter of roasted rosemary lamb and roasted root vegetables.

She wore a deep sapphire dress that hugged her curves gracefully, her hair styled in soft waves around her shoulders.

She moved with quiet elegance, placing the platter in the center of the table before taking the empty seat right beside Sebastian.

The room went dead silent.

Don Emilio paused, his fork hovering halfway to his mouth.

Valentina dropped her napkin onto her plate with a sharp clatter.

"She is sitting at the table?" Valentina hissed, looking directly at Sebastian as if he had lost his mind.

"She prepared the meal," Sebastian replied evenly, cutting a piece of meat with absolute calm.

"In our world, the help stays in the kitchen," Emilio said, his voice carrying a veiled threat.

"Times change," Giuseppe interjected, taking a sip of red wine with a faint, knowing smirk.

"Especially when the food is this good."

Valentina forced a tight, venomous smile, turning her sharp gaze toward Elise.

"Our families have been discussing the formal announcement of our engagement," Valentina said, pitching her voice to carry across the entire room.

"It's time to end all the silly speculation in the city and secure our dynasties."

Elise's hand stopped beneath the table, her fingers tightening around her linen napkin.

Engagement?

She looked sideways at Sebastian.

His face had gone completely cold, his jaw clenched so hard the muscles jumped.

"There is no engagement," Sebastian stated flatly, his voice echoing off the high ceilings.

Valentina blinked, her polished composure cracking for a fraction of a second.

"Our families discussed it extensively."

"Our families discuss weather," Sebastian retorted coldly.

Emilio Caruso slammed his wine glass down, wine splashing over the crystal rim.

"This is hardly weather, Sebastian! This is the future of our organizations!"

"No," Sebastian said, standing up slowly from his chair. "It is my life."

Valentina slowly looked across the table at Elise, the final pieces of the puzzle clicking together in her mind.

Understanding appeared in her face, instantly replaced by toxic, burning contempt.

"You cannot be serious," Valentina spat, standing up halfway from her chair.

Sebastian’s voice lowered into a terrifying, lethal growl.

"Choose your next words very carefully."

Valentina ignored the warning entirely, blinded by jealousy and aristocratic pride.

"She’s hired help, Sebastian! She's a fat cook who belongs in the scullery!"

The room went instantly, suffocatingly silent.

You could hear the wax dripping from the candles.

Elise felt every eye at the table move toward her, the familiar weight of humiliation pressing down on her chest.

She knew that exact tone.

She had heard versions of it her entire life—too big, too soft, pretty only if she changed everything about herself.

For years, she had learned to shrink before the insult could land.

Not tonight.

Elise placed her napkin deliberately beside her plate, her movements slow and completely controlled.

"You're right," Elise said, her voice clear and steady.

Valentina looked surprised, expecting tears or retreat.

"I’m probably not what people imagine," Elise continued, keeping her gaze locked on Valentina's panicked eyes.

"I’m not thin. I’m not from a powerful syndicate family. I know more about kneading bread dough than trading diamonds."

She paused, letting the silence stretch across the table.

"But I have never needed another woman to feel small in order to feel important."

Valentina’s face drained of all color.

Elise continued, her voice ringing with quiet, undeniable power.

"If you’re asking whether I’m embarrassed by the body I live in, the answer is no."

She paused, looking directly at Sebastian.

"And if you’re asking whether Sebastian should be embarrassed to want me..."

Every eye at the table turned toward him, holding their collective breath.

"...that’s a question for him."

Sebastian pushed back his heavy oak chair with a loud scrape against the floor.

He stood up to his full, towering height.

He walked slowly around the long mahogany table.

Then, he stopped directly behind Elise's chair.

His large, warm hand settled firmly on her shoulder.

Not hiding her.

Not moving her.

Simply standing beside her where every powerful person in the city could see.

"No," Sebastian said, his voice dropping into a tone of absolute, final authority.

"He is not embarrassed at all."

Don Emilio Caruso’s expression hardened into pure granite, realizing the political alliance had just shattered beyond repair.

Sebastian looked around the table, his dark eyes daring anyone to speak.

"There will be no marriage between Moretti and Caruso."

Valentina went completely pale, swaying slightly on her feet.

Her father rose all the way from his chair, his hands gripping the edge of the table.

"You understand what that decision will cost you, Sebastian!"

"I do," Sebastian replied without a single second of hesitation.

Emilio stared at Elise with venomous hatred, then back at his powerful host's son.

"You would destroy a multi-million-dollar alliance over a cook?"

Sebastian’s hand tightened slightly on Elise’s shoulder, a silent vow carved in stone.
