Chapter 6 - The Cost of Defiance

The heavy silverware fell against the porcelain with a sound like a gunshot in the frozen dining room.

Don Emilio Caruso did not pick up his linen napkin.

He stood with his knuckles pressed white against the polished mahogany, his chest heaving with silent fury.

Beside him, Valentina looked as though she had been struck across the face by an invisible hand.

Her mouth trembled, her perfect aristocratic composure shattered into jagged pieces of humiliated pride.

For three generations, no man in this state had ever dared to dismiss a daughter of the Caruso bloodline.

To be rejected was a scandal.

To be rejected in favor of a woman hired to cook broth in the scullery was an unforgivable declaration of war.

"You are making an error that blood cannot wash clean, Sebastian," Emilio whispered, his voice vibrating with lethal certainty.

Sebastian’s hand remained steady and warm upon Elise’s shoulder, his fingers resting with absolute calm against the fabric of her sapphire dress.

He did not look at Emilio with anger.

He looked at him with the cold indifference of a man who had already measured the battlefield and accepted the butcher's bill.

"My decisions are my own, Emilio," Sebastian replied, his tone low, quiet, and completely unmovable.

"I do not negotiate my life, my home, or the people who sit at my table."

Valentina stepped forward, her heels clicking aggressively against the imported marble border.

"You think this is romantic?" she hissed, her eyes locking onto Elise with pure venom.

"You think this woman will survive a single week in the world you rule?"

Elise did not drop her eyes.

Her heart hammered violently against her ribs, but her spine remained straighter than an iron rod.

She had spent her entire life being told where she belonged, which corners she was permitted to occupy, and how much space she was allowed to take up.

She had endured the quiet sneers of boutique clerks, the cruel jokes of schoolmates, and the polite dismissals of men who thought softness was an invitation to disrespect.

She was done being made to feel small.

"I survived twenty-eight years in a world that never gave me a silver spoon or a family crest to hide behind, Miss Caruso," Elise said, her voice cutting clean through the tension.

"I am quite certain I can survive whatever your bitterness has to offer."

Giuseppe let out a dry, rasping chuckle from the head of the table, leaning back in his velvet chair with pure satisfaction dancing in his dark eyes.

"The girl speaks better Italian than you do, Emilio," the old patriarch remarked, lifting his wine glass in a solitary toast.

Emilio turned his fierce, murderous glare upon Giuseppe.

"You allow your son to throw away thirty years of territorial pacts for a kitchen girl, old man?"

"My son is the Don of this family," Giuseppe replied, his voice suddenly losing all humor and taking on the chilling weight of a legendary ruler.

"He leads. I support. And if you raise your voice in my dining hall again, Emilio, you will not leave this property on your own two feet."

The air in the room became so thin it burned to inhale.

Behind Emilio, two armed Caruso bodyguards shifted their jackets, their hands hovering near their concealed weapons.

Instantly, the shadows near the dining room doors detached themselves.

Four Moretti enforcers stepped forward in unison, the cold clicks of their semi-automatic safeties echoing through the cavernous space.

Emilio held up a trembling hand, signaling his men to stand down.

He knew the rules of hospitality, and he knew that Sebastian Moretti never carried an empty threat.

"We are leaving," Emilio said coldly, turning toward his daughter.

Valentina lingered for one agonizing second, her gaze raking over Elise with a promise of absolute destruction.

"You will regret this night, cook," Valentina whispered.

"I will make sure the entire city laughs at what Sebastian Moretti dragged out of the kitchen."

With a sharp turn of her silk gown, Valentina marched toward the double doors, followed by her father and their security detail.

The heavy front doors of the estate slammed shut moments later, followed by the distant crunch of tires speeding away over gravel.

The silence that remained in the dining room was deafening.

Sebastian slowly released his grip on Elise’s shoulder, walking around to his own chair.

He did not sit down.

He stood looking down at Elise, his dark eyes searching her face with an intensity that made the room feel suddenly too warm.

Elise let out a long, shaky breath, her hands trembling as she smoothed down the front of her sapphire dress.

"Did you have to do that?" Elise asked, looking up into his sculpted, shadowed face.

"Do what?" Sebastian asked quietly.

"Throw away an entire empire's alliance just to prove a point?"

Sebastian leaned forward, resting both hands on the table, closing the distance between them until she could smell the cedarwood and crisp linen of his collar.

"I didn't do it to prove a point, Elise."

"Then why?" she demanded, her voice catching with raw vulnerability.

"Because every word she said about you was a lie," Sebastian whispered, his eyes never leaving hers.

"And because I have spent ten years looking for someone who sees the man behind the monster, not the title."

Giuseppe set down his glass with a soft clink.

May you like

"The boy is right, Elise," the old man said gently, a faint smile softening his wrinkled features.

"Now, if everyone is done threatening civil war, I would like another slice of that roast."
