Chapter 9 - Unmasked Vulnerability

Midnight settled over the Moretti mansion in a heavy, cold fog that clung to the high stone walls.
The estate was completely dark, save for the single amber light illuminating the island in the kitchen.
Elise sat on a high stool, her elbows propped on the cool marble, watching a pot of water simmer gently on the stove.
She had not been able to sleep.
Every sound of the wind rattling the old windowpanes sounded like an approaching army, a terrifying reminder of the world she had inadvertently stepped into.
The heavy wooden door creaked open, and Sebastian walked in, moving quietly to avoid waking his father upstairs.
He looked exhausted, his tie missing, the top three buttons of his black shirt undone, revealing the strong column of his throat and the edge of an old knife scar along his collarbone.
He paused when he saw her sitting there, bathed in the soft amber glow of the small lamp.
"You should be asleep, Elise," Sebastian said, his voice husky with fatigue.
"I couldn't sleep," she answered honestly, looking at him carefully.
"Are you hurt?"
"No."
"Did anyone die?"
Sebastian walked over to the counter, leaning his hips against the edge just inches from her knees.
"Nobody who didn't come looking for it," he replied softly.
Elise let out a slow sigh, shaking her head.
"I never wanted my presence here to cause bloodshed, Sebastian."
"Your presence didn't cause this, Elise," Sebastian said, his dark eyes locking onto hers with absolute intensity.
"The Carusos were looking for an excuse to challenge my authority for five years. They thought my father was dying and that I was weak because I refused to play their dirty political games."
He paused, looking down at his large, calloused hands.
"They thought Valentina would be the leash they could put around my neck to control the Moretti empire."
Elise looked down at her own lap, her fingers twisting the edge of her apron.
"Valentina was right about one thing, you know."
Sebastian’s eyes narrowed slightly. "About what?"
"I don't belong in this world," Elise whispered, the long-buried insecurities of her past finally breaking through her tough exterior.
"Look at me, Sebastian. I'm a plus-size woman from the south side of town who grew up clipping coupons and worrying about whether the electric bill would bounce."
She felt a warm tear slide down her cheek, and she hated herself for letting it fall.
"Your world is full of models, heiresses, diamonds, and power. People look at you and see a king. When they look at me beside you, they see a joke."
Sebastian didn't answer with words.
He stepped closer, closing the distance between them entirely.
He reached down, taking her hands in his, pulling them away from her apron and holding them tightly against his broad, muscular chest.
She could feel the rapid, steady beat of his heart beneath the silk of his shirt.
"Do you want to know what I see when I look at you, Elise?" Sebastian murmured, his voice dropping into a register so intimate it made the hair on her arms stand up.
Elise looked up, her vision blurred by tears.
"I see a woman who walked into a dying house and breathed life back into my father's lungs when all the money in the world couldn't do it," Sebastian said, his thumb gently catching the tear on her cheek and wiping it away.
"I see a woman who looks me in the eye without fear, who treats me like a man instead of a weapon, and who has more strength in her little finger than Valentina Caruso has in her entire hollow pedigree."
He leaned down slowly, until his forehead rested gently against hers, his breath warm against her lips.
"I don't want a trophy, Elise. I don't want an alliance written in blood and lies."
"What do you want, Sebastian?" Elise whispered, her heart pounding so hard she could hear it in her ears.
"I want you," Sebastian replied, his voice a solemn vow carved in stone.
"I want your warmth. I want your stubbornness. I want every single curve of your body, and I want the whole world to know that you are mine."
Before Elise could reply, Sebastian reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small, worn velvet box.
He opened it, revealing not a diamond ring, but a heavy antique signet ring forged from dark Roman gold, bearing the original, unadorned crest of the Moretti family from two hundred years ago.
"This belonged to my mother," Sebastian said softly, slipping the heavy gold band onto the index finger of her right hand.
"She was a baker's daughter from Palermo. She had hands just like yours, full of life and honest work."
Elise stared down at the ancient ring, feeling its heavy, comforting weight against her skin.
"Sebastian, this is too much..."
"It is a promise, Elise," Sebastian said, pressing a warm, lingering kiss to the top of her knuckles.
"Tomorrow night is the annual Syndicate Gala at the Grand Plaza Hotel. The entire underworld, the mayors, the judges, and the Carusos will be there."
Elise looked up at him, understanding dawning in her eyes.
"You want me to go with you."
May you like
"Only if you are willing to walk beside me as my equal," Sebastian replied, his gaze unwavering.
"Because tomorrow night, I am going to show this city who holds the heart of Sebastian Moretti."
