Chapter 3 - Shadows and Scars in the Kitchen

The following weeks transformed the Moretti estate in ways that left the entire household in a state of quiet shock.

Giuseppe Moretti was not only eating breakfast every morning; he was demanding lunch and dinner as well.

The medical monitors in his room had been unplugged on his strict orders, replaced by the sounds of laughter echoing down the hallway.

Giuseppe had started leaving his bed, sitting in an armchair by the window, and eventually making his way down the grand staircase into the kitchen.

The kitchen, once a sterile workspace, had become the beating heart of the mansion.

Elise stood by the large marble island, her hands dusted with flour as she kneaded a massive ball of sourdough bread.

Giuseppe sat at the corner table, wrapped in a cashmere blanket, watching her hands with the critical eye of a general inspecting troop movements.

"You're not working the dough hard enough," Giuseppe remarked, pointing a bony finger at her wrists.

"If I work it any harder, my arms will fall off, Don Moretti," Elise laughed, tossing a pinch of flour directly at him.

Giuseppe gasped in mock offense, though a genuine smile broke across his weathered face.

"Show some respect to your elder, girl."

"Respect is earned in this kitchen through crust quality, not titles," Elise retorted, sliding a tray of freshly baked muffins into the roaring oven.

At that exact moment, the heavy back door swung open, and Sebastian Moretti walked into the room.

The air in the kitchen dropped ten degrees instantly.

Sebastian looked exhausted, his black suit jacket draped over one broad shoulder, his tie loosened, and his crisp white shirt stained with a dark, ominous streak of dried blood along the left cuff.

He had spent the entire night managing a violent syndicate war across the city, neutralizing threats and securing perimeter lines with ruthless efficiency.

His face was a mask of cold, unforgiving granite, the kind of expression that made hardened criminals look down at their shoes.

Giuseppe's smile faded instantly.

"Sebastian," the old man said, his voice dropping into protective authority. "What happened?"

"Nothing that isn't handled," Sebastian replied smoothly, his deep, resonant voice cutting through the warmth of the room like a razor.

He walked toward the sink to wash his hands, his movements stiff and mechanical.

Elise wiped her hands on a kitchen towel, her dark eyes scanning Sebastian from head to toe.

She didn't see the feared mafia boss who controlled half the state.

She saw a tired, stubborn man who spent too much time pretending that control could fix everything.

"Sit down," Elise commanded, pointing directly at the kitchen stool across from Giuseppe.

Sebastian froze mid-stride, his wet hands hovering over the stainless-steel faucet.

He turned his head slowly, his dark eyes fixing on Elise with a dangerous, razor-sharp intensity.

Nobody ordered Sebastian Moretti around.

Nobody dared speak to him in that tone, let alone in his own house.

"Excuse me?" Sebastian asked, his voice dropping into a lethal, quiet register that made the kitchen staff hold their breath.

"You heard me," Elise said, stepping away from the island and walking right up to him.

She reached out, grabbing his bleeding cuff and pulling his arm closer to inspect the jagged tear in the fabric.

Sebastian flinched slightly, not from pain, but from the sheer audacity of her physical contact.

"You're bleeding on my clean floor, and you look like you haven't slept in three days," Elise scolded, her tone stern yet entirely devoid of fear.

"Sit your stubborn ass down before I hit you with a rolling pin."

Giuseppe let out a sudden, booming laugh that echoed off the tile walls, coughing slightly before grinning at his son.

"She has your measure, boy," Giuseppe wheezed, shaking his head. "Sit down."

Sebastian stared at Elise, looking for any sign of hesitation, any tremor of fear in her expression.

There was none.

There was only stubborn, unyielding warmth and authority.

Slowly, against every instinct of his calculating mind, Sebastian pulled out the stool and sat down.

Elise grabbed a warm washcloth from the counter, walked back over, and gently knelt beside his chair.

She took his large, calloused hand, carefully wiping away the dried blood from his wrist.

Sebastian looked down at the top of her head, watching the way her dark hair fell over her shoulders, smelling the faint, sweet scent of vanilla and baking bread that clung to her apron.

For a man who lived in a world of betrayal, violence, and shadows, her touch felt like an alien language.

"You take too many risks," Elise murmured softly, her thumb brushing over his pulse point.

"It's my world," Sebastian replied quietly, his voice losing its dangerous edge.

"Then maybe you need to spend more time in the kitchen," Elise replied, looking up into his dark, penetrating eyes.

May you like

Somewhere between flour-covered mornings and Giuseppe's recovering laughter, Sebastian began looking at his cook very differently.

And Elise knew, with a sinking feeling in her stomach, that she was in dangerous territory.
