Chapter 15 - The Feast of the Golden Queen

Six months later, the Moretti estate was filled with a sound that it had not known for nearly half a century: music, laughter, and the scent of roasting garlic, fresh basil, and sweet vanilla.
It was the day of the wedding, and the entire city had turned out to witness the crowning of the new Donna.
The celebration was unlike any mafia wedding in history.
Sebastian had offered to hire the most prestigious catering companies from Paris and Florence, but Elise had flatly refused.
Instead, she had spent the last two months working alongside the women of the South Side, the neighborhood bakers, the immigrant grandmothers, and the dockworkers’ wives.
The massive courtyard of the estate was filled with long wooden trestle tables draped in simple linen, laden with massive platters of handmade pasta, braised short ribs, crusty sourdough loaves, and towering tiers of fresh fruit tarts.
There was no gold leaf or tiny, inedible foam.
It was a feast of abundance, of joy, and of honest, soul-filling food that celebrated life in all its magnificent fullness.
Guests from all walks of life mingled freely under the warm spring sun.
City council members and syndicate lieutenants shared wine with line cooks, mechanics, and neighborhood elders whom Elise had known since childhood.
In the grand master bedroom, Elise stood before the full-length mirror, smoothing the fabric of her wedding gown.
It was a masterpiece of off-the-shoulder ivory lace, tailored specifically to celebrate every curve of her body without apology or restraint.
The sweetheart neckline accentuated her collarbones, the fitted bodice hugged her waist, and the skirt flowed outward like water over her hips, ending in a dramatic train that swept the floor.
She wore fresh white jasmine woven into her dark waves, and around her neck hung a simple diamond pendant given to her by Giuseppe that morning.
Marta stood behind her, adjusting the lace of the veil, tears openly running down the older woman's wrinkled cheeks.
"You are the most beautiful bride this house has ever seen, Elise," Marta whispered, sniffing softly.
"Thank you, Marta," Elise smiled, turning to hug the woman who had once greeted her with suspicion and now treated her like a daughter.
A gentle knock sounded at the door, and Giuseppe stepped into the room, looking impeccably handsome in a bespoke morning suit with a white rose in his lapel.
The old man stopped dead in his tracks, his eyes widening in pure wonder.
"Rosa would be weeping with joy right now," Giuseppe said, his voice cracking with emotion as he offered her his arm.
"Are you ready, my dear?"
"I've been ready my whole life, Don Giuseppe," Elise replied, slipping her arm through his.
Down in the blooming gardens, Sebastian stood beside the stone altar, waiting for his bride.
He looked striking in his midnight-blue suit, his hands clasped before him, his eyes scanning the crowd until the string quartet began to play the opening notes of a traditional Sicilian love song.
The double doors of the terrace opened, and Elise appeared, walking down the aisle on Giuseppe's arm.
Sebastian’s breath caught in his throat.
For a man who had faced down firing squads, rival cartels, and violent rebellions without blinking, his knees felt suddenly weak beneath him.
He saw the woman who had walked into his dark, dying mansion with a sack of apples and an apron.
He saw the woman who had looked into the eyes of a monster and demanded that he sit down and be healed.
He saw his home.
Giuseppe placed Elise’s hand into Sebastian’s, pressing their palms together before stepping back into his seat.
Sebastian looked down at Elise, his eyes shining with profound, unconditional devotion.
"You take my breath away, Elise," Sebastian whispered, his voice trembling slightly.
"You're not doing so bad yourself, Don Moretti," Elise replied with that familiar, radiant smile that had broken his defenses from the very beginning.
The vows were exchanged under the open canopy of the spring sky, sealed not with threats of violence or political treaties, but with words of mutual respect, loyalty, and deep, unshakeable passion.
When the priest finally declared them husband and wife, Sebastian didn't wait for permission.
He pulled Elise into his arms, lifting her slightly off the ground, and kissed her with a fierce, possessive tenderness that sent a roar of deafening applause through the hundreds of gathered guests.
Giuseppe cheered from the front row, raising a glass of wine high into the air.
Later that evening, as twilight painted the sky in deep shades of violet and rose, the wedding feast reached its height.
Sebastian led Elise away from the noise of the courtyard toward the quiet terrace overlooking the sprawling estate grounds.
In his hand, he held a sleek leather folio, which he placed gently into her hands.
"What is this, Sebastian?" Elise asked, looking up at him curiously.
"Open it," he murmured, his arm wrapping around her waist, pulling her back against his broad chest so she could lean into him.
Elise opened the folio, finding the official deeds, architectural blueprints, and trust documents for a massive historic property downtown.
"The Whitmore Culinary Institute and Foundation," she read aloud, her breath hitching as tears filled her eyes.
"It's yours, Elise," Sebastian whispered into her hair, his lips brushing against her temple.
"A world-class culinary academy that offers free training, business loans, and resources to anyone from the South Side who wants to build a future."
"You saved my family with your hands and your heart."
"Now, you are going to feed this entire city, exactly the way you've always wanted to."
Elise turned in his arms, her hands coming up to cup his face, looking into the dark, fierce eyes of the man who had torn down an entire empire just to stand beside her.
"I love you, Sebastian," she said, her voice rich with undeniable certainty.
"I loved you the moment you told me to sit down in that kitchen," Sebastian replied with a quiet, devastating smile.
He leaned down, pressing his forehead against hers, the two of them standing as equals beneath the stars.
Below them, the lights of the city sparkled like diamonds in the dusk.
The city that had once mocked the plus-size cook now bent its knee to the queen who had claimed its king’s heart forever.

And as the music swelled from the courtyard below, Elise smiled, knowing that she had never needed to fit into their small, fragile world.
She had simply built a bigger, warmer world of her own.
