Chapter 14 - The Tribunal of Blood and Bread

The underground council chamber beneath the historic cathedral in the old quarter had not been convened in over fifteen years.
The room was carved from ancient stone, lit only by iron torches mounted along the arched walls, casting long, menacing shadows across a massive slate table.
Seated around the table were the heads of the city's remaining Four Families—men with gray hair, weathered faces, and eyes that had seen decades of subterranean violence.
At the center of the hall, kneeling on the cold flagstones between two armed Moretti sentries, was Don Emilio Caruso.
His tailored suit was crumpled, his hands bound behind his back with heavy plastic ties, and his once-arrogant posture reduced to a pathetic, trembling slump.
The heavy wooden doors at the rear of the chamber opened with a solemn, echoing groan.
Giuseppe Moretti entered first, walking with his spine ramrod straight, wearing his traditional black overcoat, commanding the absolute deference of every don in the room.
Behind him walked Sebastian, looking like the undisputed emperor of the city, radiating absolute authority.
And beside Sebastian, walking with graceful confidence in a fitted charcoal suit with crimson silk accents, walked Elise.
Several of the older dons murmured in quiet surprise, but none dared to object.
The signet ring of Rosa Moretti was clearly visible on her hand, a recognized symbol of legitimate matriarchal authority that superseded all street politics.
Giuseppe took the head seat of the council table, while Sebastian and Elise stood directly behind him, presenting a united, impenetrable front.
"We are gathered under the ancient truce," Giuseppe announced, his voice carrying the terrifying weight of forty years of undisputed rule.
"Emilio Caruso has violated the sacred laws that govern our peace."
Emilio lifted his head, his face bruised and pale, glaring at Giuseppe with bitter desperation.
"You brought a woman into this chamber, Giuseppe!" Emilio spat, his voice hoarse.
"You let a cook sit where kings decide the fate of this city!"
Sebastian took one slow, deliberate step forward, his hand dropping to the pommel of the ceremonial dagger resting in the center of the slate table.
"The woman you insult," Sebastian said, his voice dropping into a lethal, quiet register that silenced the entire chamber, "is the reason this city has not burned to the ground."
"She exposed the poison you planted in our grain."
"She exposed the poison you planted in my kitchen to murder my father in his bed."
A collective, violent rumble of disapproval rippled through the seated dons.
To wage war was expected.
To use poison against an elder patriarch in his own home was an unforgivable sacrilege in their world.
Don Falcone, the oldest don beside Giuseppe, slammed his heavy fist onto the table.
"Is this true, Emilio?" Falcone demanded, his eyes blazing with disgust.
Emilio’s jaw worked silently, but the evidence gathered by Dante and verified by the federal warrants spoke for itself.
He had no defense.
He had no allies left.
"By the unanimous decree of this council," Giuseppe stated, rising to his full height, "House Caruso is dissolved."
"Your territories are absorbed into the Moretti syndicate."
"Your assets are seized to repay the families you poisoned."
"And you, Emilio, are stripped of your name, your weapons, and your citizenship in this city."
"If you are seen within fifty miles of these borders after tomorrow morning, you will be hunted down like a mad dog."
Emilio slumped completely forward, his forehead pressing against the cold stone floor, utterly broken.
The guards hauled him up by his arms, dragging him out through the heavy iron doors into the permanent obscurity of his exile.
Giuseppe turned slowly toward the remaining dons, gesturing toward his son.
"For forty years, I carried the burden of this city," Giuseppe said, his voice softening with profound pride.
"Today, I lay it down."
He reached out, unpinning the gold seal of the Supreme Don from his lapel, and pinned it onto the chest of Sebastian's coat.
"All hail Don Sebastian Moretti," Giuseppe proclaimed.
The council members stood in unison, bowing their heads in deep, unquestioned respect.
Then Giuseppe turned to Elise, taking her hands in his own.
"And all hail Donna Elise Moretti," the old man declared, his eyes shining.
"The woman who healed this house, who taught us that power without heart is nothing but an empty grave."
The dons bowed once more, their eyes meeting Elise's with profound, earned respect.
Sebastian wrapped his arm around Elise's waist, pulling her tightly against his side, his dark eyes looking down into hers with an adoration that no crown could ever buy.
"We did it," Elise whispered softly, looking up into his face.
"No, my love," Sebastian replied, his thumb brushing against her cheek.
May you like
"You did it."
"Now, we build our world together."
