Chapter 4 - The Elite Specter and the Silver Spoon

The fragile peace of the Moretti estate was shattered on a crisp Thursday evening by the arrival of an uninvited guest.
Black town cars pulled up the gravel driveway, their headlights cutting through the dusk like surgical blades.
Marta answered the front door, stepping aside to reveal Valentina Caruso and her formidable father, Don Emilio Caruso.
Valentina was the embodiment of elite mafia royalty: tall, slender, impeccably dressed in a tailored crimson Chanel dress, with hair pulled back into a flawless chignon.
She possessed the kind of cold, aristocratic beauty that looked good on magazine covers and even better beside a powerful syndicate boss.
The Caruso and Moretti families had discussed an alliance for years, a strategic marriage designed to merge territories and consolidate unbreakable control over the city.
Sebastian had always delayed the conversation, citing his father's failing health as his primary focus.
Valentina swept into the foyer, her diamond earrings catching the crystal chandelier light.
"Sebastian, darling," Valentina greeted smoothly, walking into the study where Sebastian was reviewing shipping manifests.
Sebastian looked up, his expression neutral, masking the irritation that flickered behind his eyes.
"Valentina. Emilio," Sebastian acknowledged, nodding to the older don who stood behind her with a calculating grin.
"We were in the neighborhood and thought we would check on Don Giuseppe," Emilio said, his voice smooth as polished obsidian.
"And to discuss matters that have been left lingering for far too long," Valentina added, stepping closer to Sebastian and resting a manicured hand on his lapel.
Sebastian didn't flinch, but he didn't lean into her touch either.
"My father is recovering, but he is not receiving visitors for business tonight," Sebastian replied coldly.
"This isn't business, Sebastian," Valentina purred, her eyes scanning the opulent room.
"This is about our future."
At that moment, Elise walked past the open study doors, carrying a tray of freshly brewed chamomile tea and honey biscuits for Giuseppe's evening routine.
She wore a simple emerald-green apron over a comfortable linen dress, her hair tied back in a loose ponytail.
Valentina caught sight of her, stopping mid-sentence.
Her eyes traveled slowly from Elise's sensible flats up to her fuller figure, a look of profound, undisguised disgust washing over her aristocratic features.
"Ah," Valentina said, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness.
"So this is the domestic help I've been hearing whispers about."
Elise paused in the hallway, turning her head slightly to meet Valentina's gaze with calm composure.
"Good evening," Elise said politely.
"It must be comforting to have someone in the house who clearly understands food," Valentina remarked, her tone sharp with condescension.
"Especially someone whose primary talent seems to be staying in the kitchen."
Emilio Caruso chuckled softly, crossing his arms over his chest.
Sebastian stood up from his desk, his towering frame instantly dominating the room, his dark eyes narrowing into dangerous slits.
Before Sebastian could speak, Elise answered with a warm, unbothered smile.
"You should stay for dinner, Miss Caruso," Elise replied smoothly.
"You look like you could use a proper meal. You're so thin a strong gust of wind might blow you right back across town."
Valentina’s breath hitched, her face flushing crimson with absolute outrage.
She had never been insulted to her face by hired help—let alone a plus-size cook from outside the syndicate world.
Sebastian bit the inside of his cheek to keep from smiling, a dangerous spark of amusement dancing in his dark eyes.
"You will join us for the formal dinner tomorrow night, Elise," Sebastian announced loudly, his voice echoing down the corridor.
"Bring your best recipes. We are having company."
Valentina turned to Sebastian in utter disbelief, her manicured nails digging into her palms.

"Sebastian, what is the meaning of this?"
"The meaning," Sebastian replied, his voice dropping into a chilling, authoritative register, "is that you are invited to dinner. I suggest you behave accordingly."
