Chapter 15 - THE WHISPER OF THE AMALFI BREEZE

Six months later, the bitter Chicago winter had finally melted away, giving way to the soft, warm bloom of an April afternoon in the Gold Coast.

The grand courtyard of the Moretti mansion was alive with the bright colors of blooming tulips and ivy crawling steadily up the dark stone walls.

Inside the private executive dining room, the heavy crystal chandeliers cast a brilliant, sparkling light across the polished mahogany table where twenty-four distinguished guests sat in polite conversation.

There were no whispers of scandal tonight.

There was no fear, no tension, and no shadow of betrayal hanging over the crystal champagne flutes.

At the absolute head of the table sat Luca Moretti, impeccably tailored, listening intently as the city's district attorney discussed the new waterfront revitalization trust.

Sitting three seats down, wearing an elegant, understated emerald silk dress that caught the evening light, I managed the dinner service coordination alongside Mrs. Carter with practiced, flawless grace.

My face was entirely healed, the bruise long since faded into a distant memory of a life I had narrowly survived.

As I approached Luca's chair to refill his glass with sparkling mineral water, he quietly set down his silver fork and looked up.

Our eyes met for a fraction of a second above the candlelight.

He didn't say a word, but a faint, unmistakable ghost of a warm smile touched the corners of his mouth.

It was a look that promised safety, stability, and a future built entirely on truth rather than shadows.

After the dinner concluded and the last of the distinguished guests departed through the wrought-iron gates, the mansion grew wonderfully quiet.

I stepped out onto the wide stone balcony overlooking the private courtyard, breathing in the cool evening breeze that carried the distant scent of Lake Michigan.

Footsteps approached softly from behind on the polished stone.

A warm, familiar woolen suit jacket was gently draped over my bare shoulders before I could even turn around.

"You're working late, Olivia," Luca's deep voice murmured quietly beside me in the dark.

I pulled the jacket closer around myself, looking out over the sparkling city lights stretching endlessly toward the horizon.

"I was just thinking about how much can change in six months, sir," I whispered honestly.

Luca stepped closer, leaning his forearms against the stone balcony railing right beside mine.

May you like

"Call me Luca," he said softly, turning his dark eyes toward my face as the city lights reflected in his deep gaze. "Especially when we're off the clock."

I smiled into the evening air, knowing that whatever chapters lay ahead of us in this city, the dark secrets of the past were finally buried for good.
