Chapter 9 - THE HIDDEN CLAUSE IN THE SAFEHOUSE ARCHIVES

Miles away from the tense atmosphere of the Moretti mansion, tucked safely inside a high-rise apartment on the North Side of Chicago, I sat at a small wooden desk staring out at the gray morning rain.

The apartment was quiet, luxurious, and completely isolated from the chaos of the outside world.

On the desk beside me sat a thick cardboard archive box that Daniel had dropped off before sunrise, containing historical property deeds and corporate audits for security review.

I opened the box, looking through old folders to keep my mind off the throbbing pain in my cheek.

Most of the documents were standard real estate contracts and shipping manifests from five years ago, filled with dense legal jargon and corporate signatures.

Then, near the bottom of the box, I pulled out a dusty, leather-bound ledger labeled Moretti-Bellini Waterfront Trust — Original Foundation Draft (2021).

Curious, I opened the heavy cover and flipped through the handwritten annotations.

Most pages were financial calculations, but on page forty-two, a folded legal addendum slipped out from between the pages and fluttered down onto my lap.

I picked it up and began reading the fine print under the dim desk lamp.

My breath caught in my throat.

It was an original contingency clause signed by Richard Bellini and Luca's late uncle during the initial formation of the shipping docks.

The clause stated clearly that if either family attempted to manipulate, blackmail, or legally defraud the other party out of their controlling shares through fabricated scandals or manufactured affairs, the offending family would instantly forfeit every single asset, dock, and warehouse to the Moretti estate for the sum of one dollar.

I read the paragraph three times to make sure I wasn't hallucinating from exhaustion.

Vanessa hadn't just been trying to trick Elena into signing over her shares out of spite.

She had been trying to trigger this exact hidden forfeiture clause by framing Luca for infidelity, which would legally force the entire trust to transfer ownership directly to the Bellini syndicate without anyone realizing the documents existed.

My hands shook as I reached for the burner phone Daniel had left on the kitchen counter for emergencies.

I dialed the secure direct line to Luca's private study.

It rang twice before a deep, cold voice answered on the other end.

"Speak," Luca's voice commanded.

"Mr. Moretti... it's Olivia," I said, my voice trembling slightly. "I'm looking through the archive box Daniel dropped off at the safehouse."

May you like

"Did something happen?" Luca asked sharply.

"Yes, sir," I breathed out, holding the fragile legal paper up to the light. "I found the original 2021 foundation draft of the waterfront trust. You need to look at page forty-two immediately before you walk into the board meeting."
