Chapter 5 - THE MIDNIGHT CONFRONTATION IN THE BASEMENT

The sudden, piercing sound of Vanessa's voice echoed off the oak-paneled walls of the study, shattering the tense silence into a million jagged pieces.

She stood in the open doorway, her silk nightrobe slipping slightly off one shoulder, her fingers digging into the wooden doorframe until her knuckles turned chalk-white.

Her dark eyes flicked from my tear-stained face down to the heavy leather checkbook still resting open on Luca's mahogany desk.

"What is this little maid still doing locked in your private office at this hour?" Vanessa demanded, her voice rising in pitch as panic began to eclipse her anger. "Why isn't she down in the servant quarters where she belongs?"

Luca didn't flinch. He didn't even turn his head immediately to look at her.

He slowly capped his gold fountain pen with a sharp, metallic click and slipped it back into his breast pocket.

Then, with slow, deliberate movements, he turned around to face his bride-to-be.

"She was just finishing her report on the guest wing supplies," Luca said smoothly, his voice devoid of any warmth or emotion.

Vanessa forced a tight, brittle laugh that sounded like cracking glass.

"A supply report at eleven o'clock at night? Honestly, Luca, you're letting the domestic staff invent excuses to hang around you," she said, stepping further into the room and glaring daggers at my trembling form. "Get out of here, Olivia. Can't you see we're having a private conversation?"

"She stays right where she is," Luca commanded softly.

The three-word sentence hit the room like a physical blow.

Vanessa stopped dead in her tracks, her manicured hand flying up to clutch the diamond necklace resting against her collarbone.

"What did you just say?" she whispered, her voice dropping an octave as genuine confusion mixed with rising terror.

"I said, Olivia stays," Luca repeated, walking slowly around his desk until he stood directly between Vanessa and the doorway. "Because we have a few very important matters to discuss regarding your afternoon activities in the guest wing."

Vanessa's face drained of every drop of color, leaving her skin looking like curdled milk under the chandelier light.

"My... my afternoon activities?" she stammered, her composure finally beginning to crack at the edges. "What are you talking about, darling? I spent the afternoon greeting early wedding gift deliveries and chatting with the florist."

Luca raised his right hand and tapped the dark screen of his computer monitor, which was still glowing softly in the background.

"Strange," Luca remarked casually. "The security cameras in the west wing corridors must have hallucinated. Because they recorded you walking into the guest bedroom at three-forty-nine this afternoon accompanied by a tall man in a dark gray suit."

Vanessa's breath caught in her throat. She opened her mouth to speak, but no sound came out—only a ragged, shallow gasp of air.

"They also recorded you physically grabbing Olivia by the arm and forcing her back into the room when she tried to walk away," Luca continued, his voice steadily rising in chilling intensity. "And they recorded that same man—William Mercer, a high-end private investigator—pinning her against the doorframe hard enough to fracture her cheekbone."

Vanessa's eyes darted wildly toward me, her expression turning from panic to pure, venomous hatred.

"That lying little trash-can bitch made the whole thing up!" Vanessa shrieked, lunging forward with her fingernails outstretched like claws toward my face. "She tripped over her own two feet in the dark and now she's spinning some pathetic fairy tale to save her miserable job!"

Before Vanessa's nails could even come within a foot of my skin, Luca's hand shot out with blinding speed.

He caught her slender wrist in a grip of steel, stopping her dead in her tracks inches from my face.

Vanessa let out a sharp cry of pain as Luca's fingers tightened around her wrist like a hydraulic clamp.

"Don't you ever—in your entire life—raise your hand in my presence again," Luca whispered into her ear, his face inches from hers.

"Let go of me, you lunatic!" Vanessa screamed, thrashing against his grip with all her might. "You're ruining everything! We're getting married in two weeks! My father's shipping syndicates are backing your entire portfolio!"

"Your father's shipping syndicates can go straight to hell," Luca replied coldly, his dark eyes burning with absolute disgust. "And so can your little corporate blackmail scheme involving Elena and those fabricated photographs."

Vanessa froze entirely, the fight draining out of her body in a single second as the name of his former wife escaped his lips.

"You... you know about Elena?" she whispered, her voice trembling violently.

"I know everything," Luca said, releasing her wrist so abruptly she stumbled backward and hit the edge of the mahogany table. "I know about the private investigator. I know about the fake five-year affair narrative you wanted delivered to her doorstep tomorrow morning. And most importantly, I know why you needed control of her shipping trusts."

The heavy oak study door swung open wide behind Vanessa with a loud thud.

Daniel stood in the doorway, flanked by two massive security guards in dark suits.

Between them stood a tall, sweating man in a rumpled gray Italian suit—William Mercer—his hands zip-tied behind his back, looking terrified out of his mind.

Daniel stepped forward and dropped a heavy blue-backed manila folder right onto Luca's desk, followed by Mercer's buzzing burner phone.

"We picked him up leaving his downtown office with the master copies, boss," Daniel reported crisply. "He sang like a canary the second we put him in the elevator."

Luca didn't even look down at the folder.

He kept his cold, dead eyes locked entirely on Vanessa, who was now backed up against the bookshelf like a trapped animal.

"Take her down to the basement holding cell," Luca instructed Daniel without raising his voice. "Lock her up with her private investigator friend."

"Luca, you can't do this!" Vanessa screamed as the two massive security guards grabbed her by the arms, lifting her off her feet as she kicked and shrieked in absolute hysteria. "My father will crush you! The Board will destroy Moretti Enterprises by sunrise!"
