Chapter 7 - ELENA'S DAWN ARRIVAL AND THE BROKEN PAST

The morning sun rose over the Chicago skyline, casting a pale, cold gray light across the wet pavement of the Gold Coast.

Inside the expansive executive kitchen of the Moretti mansion, Mrs. Carter moved in silence, brewing a pot of dark espresso for the master of the house.

Luca sat at the head of the long oak dining table, his dark eyes fixed on the heavy blue-backed folder containing all of William Mercer's fabricated evidence.

At exactly seven-thirty in the morning, the heavy front mahogany doors opened, and sharp footsteps echoed across the marble foyer.

Elena Moretti walked into the dining room.

She was forty years old, dressed in a sharp charcoal trench coat, her dark hair pulled back into a sophisticated chignon that commanded instant respect.

She had not set foot inside this house since the bitter day they signed their divorce papers four years ago.

Luca stood up slowly from his chair, his expression unreadable as he watched his former wife approach the table.

"Luca," Elena said, her voice cool and guarded as she stopped ten feet away. "Your security head called my private office at three in the morning telling me my life was about to be weaponized in some twisted blackmail plot."

Luca gestured toward the empty chair directly across from him.

"Sit down, Elena," Luca said quietly. "You're going to want to see what was scheduled to be delivered to your penthouse office in a few hours."

Elena narrowed her dark eyes, studying his tense posture before slowly removing her coat and taking a seat at the table.

Luca pushed the manila folder across the polished wood toward her.

Elena untied the red cotton string, opened the flap, and pulled out the stack of glossy photographs.

Her fingers paused over the image of herself walking under the umbrella outside the downtown seafood bistro last Tuesday night.

Then she flipped through the rest of the file, reading the typewritten summaries detailing the fabricated five-year affair narrative.

A cold, dangerous anger flashed in Elena's eyes, mirroring the exact expression that currently dominated Luca's face.

"Vanessa Bellini," Elena whispered, her voice sharp as glass. "She paid someone to stalk me, photograph my movements, and construct a fake history to destroy the shipping trust negotiations."

"She wanted you to believe I was betraying you all over again," Luca said, his jaw tightening. "She calculated that out of spite, you would lock up the family shipping shares and crash the waterfront expansion right before our wedding."

Elena looked up from the photographs, her gaze locking onto her ex-husband with a mix of old familiarity and sharp realization.

"She underestimated how much I despise being used as a pawn in a corporate game, Luca," Elena said firmly. "And she severely underestimated how much control my family still holds over the downtown docks."

Before Luca could answer, the heavy double doors of the dining room flew open.

Richard Bellini, the billionaire shipping tycoon and Vanessa’s powerful father, marched into the room flanked by two armed corporate attorneys, his face purple with rage.

"What the hell is the meaning of this, Moretti?" Richard roared, slamming his leather briefcase onto the dining table. "Where is my daughter, and why are your thugs holding her under house arrest in her own bridal suite?"
