Chapter 1 - The Trash Liner and the Ultimation in the Skyscraper

The air in the 50th-floor boardroom of Vance Global was so thin and cold it felt like glass, ready to shatter at the slightest provocation.

Outside the floor-to-ceiling windows, the sprawling Manhattan skyline glittered with indifferent millions of lights, completely unaware of the silent war unfolding inside.

Clara stood by the polished obsidian conference table, her fingers gripped tightly around the neck of a heavy black trash liner.

Bright yellow rubber gloves covered her hands—a stark, humiliating contrast to the razor-sharp charcoal suit she usually wore, or the power she actually wielded behind the scenes.

To the armed guards flanking the doors and the trembling senior partners seated around the table, she was just a maid caught in the wrong place during a late-night negotiation.

They had no idea.

Viktor Vance stepped closer, his white designer suit immaculate, the dark tattoos creeping up his neck catching the glare of the recessed LED lights.

He towered over her, his jaw clenching as he tried to mask the sudden spike of unease in his dark eyes.

Just seconds ago, her translation of the foreign delegate's final ultimatum had entirely flipped the power dynamic of the multi-billion-dollar merger.

"He thinks you're weak," Clara said, her voice dropping to a low, steady cadence that cut through the heavy silence of the room.

Viktor’s eyes narrowed into dangerous slits.

He leaned down, invading her space, his voice a low, gravelly growl born of absolute arrogance.

"What did you say?"

Clara didn’t flinch.

She met his intense gaze dead-on, refusing to drop her chin.

"Your interpreter translated your words literally. He made you sound like a child," she fired back, her tone sharp as a scalpel.

"He is not asking permission, Viktor. He is setting the price."

The silence that followed was suffocating.

Viktor stared at her, the mask of a ruthless billionaire cracking just enough to reveal sheer disbelief.

The woman holding a trash bag was looking down at him—the apex predator of the city—as if he were a student in need of a lesson.

Slowly, Viktor closed the remaining distance between them, his breath hot against her skin, his chest rising as a mixture of fury and sudden, electric curiosity coursed through him.

"What did you tell him?" Viktor whispered, his voice trembling with dark menace.

Clara held her ground, her gloved hands tightening around the black plastic bag as the senior partners watched in stunned horror, terrified of the billionaire's wrath.

She knew the stakes were astronomical; this merger represented forty percent of the global shipping lanes, a prize that could cement Viktor’s empire or destroy it overnight.

Her official title at Vance Global was custodial supervisor, a deliberate disguise she had maintained for six months to infiltrate the inner sanctum of the company.

Her real name was Clara Sterling, a disgraced linguistic genius and corporate intelligence operative seeking vengeance for her father’s mysterious ruin.

Viktor had no idea that the woman he treated like dirt was the exact person who held the key to his survival in the international market.

"I told him," Clara whispered back, her voice echoing clearly in the vast, sterile room, "that you would burn his ports to ash before you paid a single cent above market value."

Viktor’s breath hitched.

The foreign delegate, General Al-Tariq, had demanded a twenty percent markup on all sovereign shipping contracts, an outrageous extortion attempt that Viktor’s cowardly lead interpreter had translated as a polite request.

By correcting the translation on the fly in fluent, archaic Arabic dialect, Clara had forced Al-Tariq to realize that Vance Global was not intimidated by his threats.

"You spoke in the Dialect of the Seven Valleys," Viktor murmured, realization dawning in his dark eyes, replacing his anger with a profound, calculating shock.

"Only high-ranking tribal diplomats speak that dialect. Who the hell are you?"

Before Clara could craft a plausible lie to protect her cover, the heavy oak doors of the boardroom swung open with a resounding slam.

Marcus Vance, Viktor’s treacherous younger brother and chief operating officer, strode into the room with a smug, arrogant smirk plastered across his face.

"Well, well, well," Marcus drawled, his eyes flicking from Viktor to Clara with mocking amusement.

"I leave the boardroom for twenty minutes to check the financials, and my brilliant brother is threatening the cleaning staff."

Marcus stepped closer, eyeing Clara’s yellow rubber gloves and trash bag with undisguised disdain.

"Get back to work, cleaning woman, before I have security throw you out on the street."

Viktor didn't look at his brother; his gaze remained locked onto Clara’s fearless eyes, a dark storm brewing behind his expression.

"Shut up, Marcus," Viktor commanded without breaking eye contact, his voice slicing through the room like a razor blade.

"She stays."

Marcus’s smirk faltered, his eyes narrowing as a seed of intense jealousy and suspicion took root in his mind.

He knew Viktor never reversed an order, especially not for a maid.

Something had fundamentally shifted in this room tonight, and Marcus was determined to find out what secret these two had just shared over a bag of garbage.
