Chapter 12 - The Vault and the Confession in the Dark

The interior of the titanium panic room was dead silent, insulated from the chaos raging outside by thick layers of soundproofing and blast-proof steel.
Emergency blue LED strip lighting cast a cool, futuristic glow over the small, fortified space, which was lined with digital monitors, weapons lockers, and secure communication arrays.
Clara sank against the cold steel wall, dragging in ragged breaths of the filtered oxygen, her hands trembling slightly as the adrenaline finally began to recede.
Viktor stood right beside her, his chest heaving under his ruined shirt, his dark eyes scanning the security monitors outside.
The cameras showed the three surviving mercenaries frantically trying to plant an explosive charge on the titanium vault door.
"They won't get through this door," Viktor said flatly, though his jaw was clenched so hard a muscle twitched in his cheek.
"This vault is rated to withstand a tactical missile strike. But they've cut the building's main power and severed our satellite uplink."
"Which means we're completely isolated," Clara replied, her voice steadying as she pushed herself up from the floor and walked over to the auxiliary control console.
"Whoever sent them knew our exact security rotations. This wasn't a random hit by a cartel."
Viktor turned his head slowly, his dark gaze locking onto her with an intensity that felt heavier than the vault doors.
"It was Marcus's legal team," Viktor said, his voice dropping into a dark, venomous murmur.
"Before I had Marcus locked away in the sub-level holding facility, he signed over his voting trust to a shadow corporation managed by a man named Sterling."
Clara froze. Her fingers hovered over the keyboard of the control console.
"Sterling?" she whispered, her blood running instantly cold.
"Your father’s former business partners," Viktor continued, taking a slow step toward her.
"The men who helped Marcus fabricate the fraudulent audit that ruined Richard Sterling five years ago. They didn't just want Vance Global; they wanted vengeance against the family name that dared to cross them."
Clara stared at him, the horrifying realization washing over her like a tidal wave.
Her entire crusade—the fake maid persona, the months of scrubbing floors, the dangerous extraction of the ledgers—had been manipulated by forces much larger than just Viktor Vance.
"You knew," Clara accused, her voice trembling with a mixture of betrayal and fury.
"You knew who I was the very first day I walked into your boardroom with a trash bag."
Viktor didn't look away. He didn't deny it.
Instead, he closed the remaining distance between them, trapping her against the cold steel console.
"I knew you were Richard Sterling’s daughter the moment you looked at me with those eyes," Viktor confessed softly, his hand reaching out to cup her cheek, his thumb tenderly brushing her skin.
"You walked into my building looking for blood. But instead of killing me, you saved my empire."
Clara looked up into his dark, magnetic eyes, wanting to hate him, wanting to pull away, but finding herself completely ensnared in the dangerous gravity of his presence.
"Why didn't you expose me?" she whispered.
May you like
"Because," Viktor murmured, leaning in until his lips brushed against hers, "you are the only thing in this brutal, cold city that makes me feel alive."
The kiss was sudden, fierce, and desperate—a collision of shared grief, burning vengeance, and undeniable desire that obliterated the boundaries between enemy and ally.
