Chapter 4 - The Alleyway Confrontation and the Dangerous Truth

The cold October wind whipped through the narrow concrete alleyway behind Vance Global, carrying the distant sirens of Manhattan traffic and the acrid scent of asphalt.
Clara stopped dead in her tracks, her hand gripping the metal handle of her cleaning cart so tightly her knuckles turned paper-white.
Viktor stood blocking the exit, his tall, imposing frame draped in the dark shadows of the towering skyscraper, the glowing tip of his cigar casting a faint, eerie red light across his sharp jawline.
"You're making a habit of hiding in the dark, Mr. Vance," Clara said, keeping her voice remarkably steady, refusing to let him hear the terror hammering in her chest.
Viktor took a slow drag from his cigar, his dark eyes locked onto hers with a predatory intensity that made the surrounding air feel thick and electric.
"And you're making a habit of being in the exact place you shouldn't be when security alarms go off," Viktor replied smoothly, taking a slow, deliberate step toward her.
"Sector nine was a decoy, Clara. Someone accessed the core mainframe from a terminal on the fiftieth floor using an administrative bypass code that hasn't been active in five years."
Clara didn't blink.
"I clean the executive offices, Mr. Vance. I see a lot of things people leave lying around."
Viktor stopped just inches away from her, towering over her petite frame.
He reached out, his warm fingers gently catching her chin, tilting her face upward so she had no choice but to look directly into his dark, calculating eyes.
"You didn't just see something, Clara," Viktor whispered, his voice dropping into a low, gravelly rumble that sent a shiver straight down her spine.
"You downloaded the entire offshore ledger. The same ledger that disappeared the night Richard Sterling died."
Hearing her father's name spoken aloud by the man she believed had murdered him felt like a physical blow to her stomach.
Clara’s breath hitched, her eyes flashing with sudden, uncontrollable fury that she instantly tried to mask.
"I don't know any Richard Sterling," she said, her voice tight and cold.
Viktor let out a dark, humorless chuckle, his thumb gently tracing the line of her jawline.
"Don't lie to me," he murmured.
"Richard Sterling was a brilliant, stubborn fool who thought he could outplay the financial elite of New York. He crossed the wrong people, and he paid the price."
"You murdered him," Clara blurted out before she could stop herself, the venom dripping from her words breaking through her careful disguise.
Viktor’s expression didn't change into anger, as she expected.
Instead, a deep, sorrowful shadow crossed his dark eyes, replacing the cold billionaire exterior with something raw and haunted.
"I didn't kill your father, Clara," Viktor whispered, his voice cracking slightly with a sincerity that shook her to her core.
"In fact, I was the only person in this city trying to save him from the people who actually pulled the trigger."
Before Clara could process the earth-shattering implication of his words, the sound of screeching tires echoed loudly at the end of the alleyway.

A sleek black bulletproof SUV came tearing around the corner, its high beams blindingly bright as it slammed on its brakes right in front of them.
The passenger door flew open, and Marcus Vance stepped out, holding a heavy-caliber firearm aimed directly at Viktor and Clara.
