Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the Machine and the Stolen Files

The basement sub-level of Vance Global was a cavernous labyrinth of concrete pillars, humming server racks, and security checkpoints that felt more like a maximum-security prison than a corporate headquarters.

Clara pushed her gray steel cleaning cart down the long, fluorescent-lit corridor, her heart pounding a frantic rhythm against her ribs.

She had slipped out of the washroom before Viktor could interrogate her further, using her intimate knowledge of the building's architectural blueprints to navigate the maintenance tunnels.

In her apron pocket, tucked safely inside a hollowed-out sponge, was the encrypted micro-drive containing the complete financial audit of Vance Global's illicit offshore accounts.

She needed to reach the secure data drop on the loading dock before the automated security lockdown triggered by Marcus’s discovery could lock the doors.

"Hey! You there! Stop!" a harsh voice barked from behind her.

Clara froze.

She slowly turned her cart around to find two heavy-set corporate security guards marching toward her down the hallway, their hands resting ominously on the tasers clipped to their utility belts.

"Cleaning staff are restricted to the upper floors after midnight," the lead guard snapped, his eyes narrowing suspiciously as he approached.

"Mr. Vance’s office called down. All personnel on basement level three are to report for immediate biometric scanning."

Clara forced her breathing to remain calm, adopting a hesitant, bewildered expression.

"I was just finishing the floor polishing in sector four," she said, pitching her voice slightly higher to sound meek and unintimidated.

"Mr. Vance himself told me—"

"I don't care what Mr. Vance told you," the guard interrupted gruffly, stepping directly in front of her cart and reaching out to search her apron pockets.

"Protocol is protocol. Hand over your ID badge and empty your pockets."

Clara’s hand instinctively brushed against the hollowed-out sponge in her pocket.

If they searched her, she was finished. Her cover would be blown, her father’s memory disgraced, and she would likely disappear into one of Viktor’s private holding facilities before morning.

Just as the guard’s thick fingers grazed the edge of her apron, the shrill, blaring alarm of the primary security override echoed through the entire basement level.

Flashing red emergency lights flooded the corridor, casting a bloody hue over the concrete walls.

The wall-mounted intercom crackled to life with Marcus Vance’s frantic voice.

"All security teams to sector nine immediately! Someone has breached the executive mainframe server! Lock down all elevators and exits!"

The two guards hesitated, torn between executing their protocol on Clara and responding to the catastrophic breach in sector nine—which was on the opposite side of the building.

"Damn it," the lead guard muttered, glaring at Clara one last time.

"Get back to the service elevator and stay there. If you move, you're fired."

Without waiting for a reply, both guards turned on their heels and sprinted down the corridor toward sector nine, their heavy boots echoing loudly against the concrete.

Clara let out a long, shaky breath, her knees trembling slightly as the adrenaline receded.

She didn't waste a second. She wheeled her cart around and dashed toward the emergency service exit leading directly to the underground alleyway.

As she pushed open the heavy steel door into the chilly night air, a tall, imposing figure stepped out from the shadows of the brick wall, blocking her path.

It was Viktor.

He was leaning against a concrete pillar, smoking a dark cigar, the red ember glowing faintly in the dark.

May you like

He didn't look surprised to see her running out of the service exit.

"Leaving so soon, Clara?" Viktor murmured, blowing a thin ring of smoke into the cold night air as he stepped directly into her path.
