Chapter 11 - The Smoke and the Obsidian Blade

The acrid stench of sulfur and tear gas filled the fifty-fifth-floor penthouse, burning the throat and blinding the eyes with a thick, choking white fog.
Clara coughed violently, her cheek pressed against the cold black marble floor as the rhythmic, deafening rat-tat-tat of automatic gunfire chewed through the drywall and shattered the minimalist art installations above them.
Viktor shielded her body with his own, his broad shoulders tensed, a dark vein throbbing violently along his neck as he scanned the swirling smoke through narrowed, dangerous eyes.
"Stay down," Viktor growled, his voice a low, gravelly command that brooked no argument.
He rolled off her with feline agility, reaching into the hidden tactical holster strapped beneath his tailored jacket to pull out a heavy, matte-black Sig Sauer pistol equipped with an integrated silencer.
Through the haze of smoke, the heavy steel-reinforced security doors of the private elevator hissed open with a pneumatic groan.
Four heavily armed mercenaries, clad in matte-black combat gear and wearing thermal-imaging helmets, poured out into the penthouse living room.
They moved with chilling, military-grade coordination, their assault rifles sweeping the room for targets.
"Vance!" the lead mercenary barked, his voice distorted through a tactical comm-unit.
"The contract says dead or alive. Doesn't matter to us!"
Viktor didn't wait to parley.
From behind the overturned marble coffee table, he raised his pistol and fired twice with lethal precision.
The silenced shots popped like snapping twigs; the lead mercenary staggered backward, taking two rounds directly to the chest armor, and collapsed heavily onto the floor.
The remaining three mercenaries immediately unleashed a barrage of suppressive fire, riddling the marble table with destructive force, sending stone chips flying like shrapnel.
Clara’s heart hammered a frantic rhythm against her ribs, her mind racing through the tactical layout of the penthouse.
She knew the panic room’s manual biometric override was located right behind the obsidian bar, less than twenty feet away through the smoke.
"Viktor," she hissed softly, crawling low to the ground behind him.
"The bar. The manual override."
Viktor didn't need to be told twice.
He fired three rapid shots to pin the mercenaries behind a concrete pillar, then grabbed Clara by the wrist, hauling her up from the floor with raw, brute strength.
They sprinted through the blinding white smoke, bullets whizzing past their ears, the wind of the projectiles grazing Clara's jacket.
With a desperate lunge, Viktor slammed his palm against the hidden brass panel behind the bar.
The heavy wall-mounted liquor display swung inward with a loud, mechanical clank, revealing the reinforced titanium panic room.

They dove inside just as a concentrated burst of assault rifle fire shredded the wooden frame of the bar where they had stood a fraction of a second before.
Viktor slammed the thick titanium door shut, spinning the manual deadbolt into place just as heavy bodies slammed against the exterior of the vault.
