Chapter 8 - The General’s Return and the Midnight Siege

The alarm klaxons blared through the sterile, black-and-silver lobby of Vance Global, flashing an urgent red warning against the polished marble floors.
Armed private mercenaries, wearing tactical gear bearing the insignia of the Al-Tariq Sovereign Syndicate, fanned out across the room, neutralizing the corporate security guards with ruthless efficiency.
At the center of the armed detachment stood General Al-Tariq himself, dressed in a pristine military uniform adorned with heavy gold medals, his face carved from granite and absolute authority.
Clara and Viktor stepped out of the private express elevator onto the ground floor, flanked by four of Viktor’s elite personal guards.
The atmosphere in the lobby was thick with the scent of ozone, gun oil, and impending violence.
"Viktor Vance!" Al-Tariq called out, his deep, resonant voice echoing off the high ceiling as he walked forward, resting his hand casually on the ornate hilt of a ceremonial dagger at his waist.
"You play a dangerous game, hiding behind locked doors while your empire crumbles from within."
Viktor stepped forward smoothly, his posture completely relaxed, radiating an aura of supreme confidence that matched the general's own.
"General," Viktor greeted evenly, his hands tucked casually into the pockets of his trousers.
"I wasn't hiding. I was simply taking out the trash."
Al-Tariq’s eyes flicked past Viktor, landing directly on Clara, who stood a few paces back in her sharp charcoal attire.
A slow, knowing smile spread across the general's weathered face.
"Ah," Al-Tariq said, pointing a gloved finger at her.
"The ghost translator. The woman who spoke the Dialect of the Seven Valleys with the authority of a desert prince."
Clara didn't cower under the general's intense gaze; she stepped forward, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Viktor.
"A translation is only as good as the truth behind it, General," Clara spoke up, her voice clear and unwavering, cutting through the tense silence of the lobby.
"And Viktor Vance just proved he has no use for liars or thieves."
Al-Tariq stared at her for a long moment, visibly impressed by her fearless composure, before throwing his head back in a booming, genuine laugh.
"By Allah, Viktor, you surround yourself with more dangerous women than an Ottoman sultan," Al-Tariq chuckled, shaking his head.
"Very well. The shipping contracts are signed. Twenty percent markup accepted, provided the ghost stands as the primary mediator between our syndicates."
Viktor’s jaw tightened imperceptibly, a protective, possessive flash sparking in his dark eyes at the general's proposition.
"She doesn't work for syndicates, General," Viktor replied coldly.
"She works for Vance Global."
"And what does Clara say to that?" Al-Tariq challenged, raising an eyebrow as he looked directly at her.
Clara met Viktor’s intense, burning gaze, realizing that the game had changed entirely.

She wasn't a maid anymore. She was sitting at the right hand of the apex predator.
"I accept," Clara said clearly. "On my own terms."
