Chapter 14 - The Descent into the Server Room

The vertical maintenance shaft was a claustrophobic maze of steel ladders, fiber-optic cables, and humming electrical conduits plunging down through the core of the skyscraper.
Clara descended the metal rungs with agile, silent speed, her combat instincts completely overriding any fear of the dark drop beneath her.
Viktor followed closely behind, his tactical boots hitting every rung with calculated precision, his weapon drawn and ready for any threat from above or below.
"Forty-ninth floor approaching," Clara whispered back up the shaft, her voice echoing softly off the concrete walls.
She reached out, pushing open the rusted service panel marked Server Core B, and slipped quietly through the opening into the chilled, neon-lit sanctuary of the primary data hub.
Rows of towering, black server racks hummed with a deep, rhythmic bass, blinking with thousands of tiny green and blue indicator lights.
Viktor dropped through the panel right behind her, immediately sweeping the perimeter with his pistol before securing the heavy metal door with a manual deadbolt.
"We have about five minutes before the mercenaries realize we went down the maintenance shaft instead of up," Viktor said, holstering his weapon and walking over to the main terminal console.
"Can you upload the encrypted ledger to the SEC server from here?"
Clara slid into the ergonomic leather chair, her fingers instantly flying across the mechanical keyboard, executing complex shell scripts and routing the data through a dozen encrypted proxy servers around the globe.
"I'm routing it directly through the federal whistleblower portal," Clara said, her eyes locked onto the rapid lines of code scrolling down the monitor.
"Once this packet hits their mainframe, the warrants for Marcus and his shadow corporation will be auto-generated within sixty seconds."
"Do it," Viktor commanded, standing right behind her shoulder, watching the progress bar tick upward from zero to ninety-nine percent.
Suddenly, the primary server monitor flashed a blinding, hostile red.
Access Denied. Root Override Initiated from Remote Terminal.
Clara slammed her hand on the desk in frustration.
"Someone is blocking the upload from an outside terminal!" she hissed.
"It's not an outside terminal," a familiar, arrogant voice echoed from the shadows near the back of the server racks.

Clara and Viktor spun around instantly, raising their weapons.
Stepping out from behind a towering row of server blades, holding a remote kill-switch detonator, was Marcus Vance.
