Daniel played his part masterfully. He cried in front of his mother, thanking her for being there for me while he was away.
He complained about the hospital bills and the stress of the twins being in the NICU.
Then, he dropped the bait.
“Mom, the trust account got frozen because of some glitch when my wife fell,” Daniel said during a coffee break in the hospital cafeteria. “I need to move that $150,000 to an offshore account to avoid some tax penalties, but I can’t do it while the trust is locked.”
Carol’s eyes practically lit up with dollar signs.
“Oh, darling, that sounds complicated,” she purred. “Can I help?”
“Actually, yes,” Daniel said, rubbing his eyes in feigned exhaustion. “If you and Vanessa can come to the house tomorrow night, I can authorize you as proxy signers. We can route the money into your account temporarily until I set up the new trust.”
Carol hugged him tightly, a predatory smile hidden against his shoulder.
