Chapter 11 - The Trap is Set

The doctor released me from the hospital the next afternoon, though the twins had to remain in the NICU for a few more weeks.

Daniel drove me home in silence. The tension in the car was palpable.

When we walked into the house, I stared at the spot on the kitchen floor where I had nearly lost everything. I took a deep breath, steeling myself for the performance of a lifetime.

At 7:00 PM sharp, the doorbell rang.

Carol and Vanessa walked in, carrying a casserole dish and wearing sympathetic smiles.

“Oh, look who’s home!” Carol gushed, rushing forward to hug me.

I let her, suppressing the overwhelming urge to vomit.

“How are you feeling, dear?” Vanessa asked, her eyes darting toward the kitchen island where she had assaulted me just days prior.

“My memory is still fuzzy,” I lied smoothly. “But Daniel says you both have been so helpful. Thank you.”

We sat down at the dining room table.

Daniel brought out his laptop and a stack of printed banking documents.

“Okay,” Daniel said, opening the laptop. “I’ve bypassed the biometric lock on the trust. I just need both of you to sign these proxy forms, and I’ll initiate the transfer into Mom’s account.”

Vanessa’s hands were literally shaking with excitement as she grabbed the pen.

They signed the documents without even reading the fine print.

“Done,” Carol said proudly. “The money will be safe with us, Daniel.”

“I know it will,” Daniel said, his voice turning dangerously flat.

He didn't initiate a transfer. He pressed a single button on his keyboard.

The large smart TV mounted on the dining room wall suddenly flared to life.
