Chapter 15 - The New Fortress

It has been two years since that night.

Carol and Vanessa’s trial was a swift and brutal affair. Faced with the HD video evidence, the signed confessions, and the mountain of financial fraud I had uncovered, their defense attorneys essentially threw in the towel.

Carol was sentenced to eight years in federal prison for multiple counts of fraud and endangerment.

Vanessa received five years, plus a massive restitution order from her previous employer that guarantees she will be financially ruined for the rest of her life.

We never visited them. We never answered their letters. We completely erased them from our existence.

Daniel sold his mother’s foreclosed house out from under the bank, ensuring she had absolutely nothing left to return to.

As for us, we moved away from Ha Hoa, wanting a fresh start in a place untainted by terrible memories.

I sit now on the porch of our new home, a beautiful property surrounded by tall, protective trees.

Daniel is in the yard, laughing as he chases our healthy, energetic two-year-old twins through the sprinkler.

They are strong, beautiful, and completely oblivious to the chaos surrounding their birth.

The $150,000 trust account remains securely locked, gaining interest, waiting to provide them with the brilliant future they deserve.

Sometimes, I look back on that terrifying day, remembering the feeling of lying helpless on the floor.

But then I remember the look on my in-laws' faces when they realized they had tried to outsmart a forensic accountant.

I didn't just survive their betrayal. I documented it, audited it, and used it to burn their wicked empire to the ground.

And I’d do it all over again to protect my family.
