Chapter 7 - The Cloud Never Forgets

My attorney, Marcus, arrived within the hour.
He handed me a secure tablet, his face grim.
“The police found your phone under the cabinet, completely smashed,” Marcus said softly. “They’re treating it as an accidental fall. Your mother-in-law has already been heavily involved, directing the narrative.”

I logged into the hidden security interface.
Daniel had always hated the idea of cameras inside the house, so I only installed one, completely disguised, pointing directly at the kitchen island to monitor the safe and important documents.
I accessed the cloud backup from the afternoon of the incident.
My heart hammered against my ribs as the video buffered.

Vanessa slapping the phone out of my hand.
Vanessa forcing my thumb onto the scanner while I begged for an ambulance.
Carol walking in, assessing my dying body, and coldly instructing her daughter to leave me there.
Marcus watched the footage over my shoulder, the color draining from his face.

“My God,” he whispered. “This isn’t just fraud. This is attempted murder.”
“Download it,” I instructed, my voice devoid of emotion. “Make three backups. Give one to a private investigator. I need to know exactly why they were so desperate for $150,000.”
