Chapter 4 - Fighting for Two

The blinding lights of the hospital ceiling rushed past me in a dizzying blur.
“Blood pressure is bottoming out! We need to get her to the OR right now!”
“Fetal heart rates are dropping. Prep for an emergency C-section!”
The voices of the medical staff were frantic, yet incredibly coordinated.
I felt a mask being placed over my face, pushing cold, sterile oxygen into my lungs.

Meanwhile, 9,000 miles away in a Singapore hotel room, Daniel’s laptop began chiming violently.
It wasn't a standard email notification. It was the high-priority, encrypted alert I had set up.
He bolted out of bed, staring at the screen in horror.
URGENT: DURESS PROTOCOL ACTIVATED. ACCOUNT FROZEN. SOS DISPATCHED TO HA HOA RESIDENCE.
Daniel tried calling my phone. It went straight to voicemail.
He immediately called his mother, his hands shaking as he held the phone to his ear.
“Mom? Mom, wake up. Something’s happened at the house. I got a security alert.”
Carol’s voice sounded perfectly groggy, a masterful performance.

“Daniel? What time is it? I don't know what you’re talking about. Vanessa went to check on her earlier, but she wasn't home.”
“I’m coming home,” Daniel said, his voice cracking. “I’m getting on the next flight.”
