I looked at Carol, letting my eyes widen in feigned confusion.
“I… I slipped?” I whispered, keeping my voice frail and uncertain.
Carol let out a loud, theatrical sigh of relief, exchanging a quick, victorious glance with Vanessa.
“Yes, darling,” Carol said, patting my hand condescendingly. “You had a terrible fall. It’s a miracle the police were doing a welfare check in the neighborhood and saw the front door ajar.”
“Where is Daniel?” I asked, playing the terrified, fragile wife.
“He’s on a flight back. He’ll be here by tomorrow morning,” Vanessa chimed in. “Don't you worry about anything. We are here to take care of you and our new niece and nephew.”
The sheer audacity made my blood boil, but I forced my facial muscles to remain slack.
“Thank you,” I mumbled, closing my eyes and turning my head away. “I’m so tired.”
“Rest, dear. We’ll manage everything,” Carol said.
As soon as they left the room, my demeanor completely shifted.
