Chapter 14 - Handcuffs and Tears

“You called the cops?!” Vanessa shrieked, lunging toward me.

Daniel intercepted her, throwing her back against the wall.

“Don't you ever touch her again,” he growled.

The front door burst open. The same officers who had found me bleeding on the floor days earlier walked in, accompanied by two detectives.

Marcus, my attorney, walked in right behind them.

“Carol and Vanessa,” one of the detectives said, holding up a warrant. “You are both under arrest for attempted grand larceny, conspiracy to commit fraud, and reckless endangerment.”

“No! I’m his mother! He won't press charges!” Carol screamed as the officer forcefully pulled her arms behind her back and clamped the cold steel handcuffs around her wrists.

“I am pressing charges,” Daniel said clearly. “And my lawyer is handing over all the financial evidence of your previous frauds to the district attorney. You are going to prison.”

Vanessa collapsed onto the floor, wailing and begging for forgiveness as the officers dragged her out of the house.

Carol fought the police the entire way to the cruiser, screaming obscenities at me, blaming me for ruining her life.

I stood in the doorway, leaning against Daniel, watching the police cars drive away into the night.

The silence that settled over the house afterward wasn't heavy or oppressive.

It was clean. It was the sound of a tumor being removed.
